Some people have decided to reduce the number of times they fly every year or to stop flying altogether.
Do you think the environmental benefits of this development outweigh the disadvantages for individuals and businesses?

Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some people choose to fly less now.In my opinion advantages of this development is more than the disadvantages.
As less number of people flying annuall would result in less air pollution. Due to Airplanes carbondioxide is emitted into the air that leads to a major chunk of air pollution and ozone layer depletion. Since lesser number of people travelling by air would results in less no of planes leading to minimal air traffic. For example after France banned its domestic flights to the places where people can commute through cars and trains a huge reduction in air pollution was noticed.
Whereas when it comes to the demerits of this innovation. For individuals who live away from their family it would be more video calls and lesser in-person meetups. When it comes to businesses it means more video based conferences rather than wor trip. All businesses that are mainly based on tourism for example businesses in countries like Thailand, Bali and Malaysia lesser flights would lead to lesser people visiting and that would eventually lead to less profits and loss of jobs for people employed there as happened during the pendamic of Covid-19.
Despite having demerits i strongly believe that the environmental benefits that comes with it will always be more than that of the disadvantages for businesses and people.
In conclusion people these days are prefering to travel lesser by plane due to its environmental benefits despite having the fair share of disadvantages. Although, these enivronmental benefits always goes beyond the individual disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear from the introduction and conclusion: you believe the environmental benefits outweigh the disadvantages. You address both sides, identifying reduced pollution as a benefit and family separation, business travel, tourism income and jobs as costs. The France example and reference to the pandemic help make the discussion relevant. This meets the task well, but the support is uneven: the environmental argument is explained through a chain of effects, while the disadvantages are mostly listed, and the claim that benefits “will always” outweigh them is asserted rather than demonstrated. Develop one individual and one business impact in more detail, and explain why the environmental gain is more significant overall. That would make the argument more fully extended.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph on environmental benefits, a paragraph on disadvantages, and a conclusion. The contrast between the two sides is easy to follow, and examples are placed alongside the relevant points. However, some transitions feel mechanical or are not punctuated effectively, as in “Whereas when it comes to the demerits of this innovation. For individuals…”. The final paragraph also repeats the position without adding much synthesis, and “Although” introduces a fragment-like sentence. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each example explicitly to the point it supports. A more developed conclusion comparing the scale of the benefits and costs would strengthen progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “air pollution,” “ozone layer depletion,” “air traffic,” “video-based conferences,” “tourism” and “loss of jobs.” This gives you enough range to discuss the issue, and the main meaning is generally clear. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “less number of people,” “a major chunk of air pollution,” “wor trip” and “lesser flights.” Spelling errors such as “pendamic,” “enivronmental” and “prefering” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise, natural phrasing and check spelling carefully; for example, use “fewer flights” and “a substantial source of emissions.” This would make the vocabulary more controlled and appropriate to an academic essay.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex structures, including cause-and-effect clauses (“Since lesser number of people travelling by air…”) and a conditional example about people living away from family. The overall meaning remains understandable, but some errors in agreement, verb forms, sentence boundaries and punctuation make the writing less controlled. For instance, “advantages … is” should use a plural verb, and “would result in less no of planes” has an unclear subject and verb pattern. The opening “Some people choose to fly less now.In my opinion…” also needs a space and clearer sentence separation. Review subject–verb agreement and ensure each sentence has a complete, correctly formed clause. More accurate complex sentences would improve the range you already attempt.
