Do you think the environmental benefits of this development outweigh the disadvantages for individuals and businesses?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Soem people have chosen to take fewer flights every year or give up air travel totally in order to benefit the environment.

in my opinion it is a positive step for the environemental benefits. The disadvantages can be managed with a proper plan.

Airplanes release a large amount of toxic gases which are hazardous to the ecosystem. Air pollution is a concerning point that is damaging the nature as well as creatures. Flying less can lower the emission of these toxic gases into the air. People who take flights to attend a meeting can travel by bus or train. For international arrangements, they can join the meeting online via video call. through this, their business will not be affected.

On the other hand, reducing air travel can have some negative effects on individuals and businesses. People who live far away from their families may find it difficult to visit their loved ones, especially when travelling to other countries. Moreover, businesses that depend on international travel may face difficulties in meeting foreign clients and developing professional relationships. For example, businesspeople may need to travel abroad to negotiate contracts or attend important conferences. As a result, limiting flights could reduce business opportunities and affect company profits. However, these problems can be partly overcome through online meetings and other forms of communication.

In conclusion, there are alternative methods available instead of flying People can take part in protecting ecosystem and still manage to perform their day to day task. The disadvantages are managable.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you believe reducing flights benefits the environment and that the disadvantages can be managed. You address both sides, explaining that flying less reduces emissions and that families and businesses may lose opportunities to meet in person. The examples of using trains or video calls and travelling to negotiate contracts are relevant. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained. For instance, you say that online meetings mean business “will not be affected,” but later acknowledge that limiting flights could reduce opportunities and profits; explain when remote contact is sufficient and when it is not. The environmental case would also be stronger with a specific explanation or example of how reduced aviation benefits the climate or ecosystems.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: it introduces your view, presents environmental benefits, considers disadvantages, and concludes that these can be managed. Paragraphing helps distinguish the main stages of the argument, and transitions such as “On the other hand” and “In conclusion” make the direction easy to follow. Cohesion is sometimes mechanical or unclear, however. The opening environmental paragraph moves quickly from pollution to alternative transport and online meetings, while the link between these examples and the claim that business will not be affected needs clearer explanation. The conclusion also introduces alternatives without smoothly summarising the comparison. Use more precise links between claims and examples, and ensure each paragraph develops one central point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “air pollution,” “ecosystem,” “international travel,” “negotiate contracts,” and “company profits.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “professional relationships.” However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce accuracy, including “Soem,” “environemental,” and “managable.” Some combinations are unnatural or imprecise: “toxic gases” is repeated, “damaging the nature” is awkward, and “day to day task” does not fit the plural meaning. Aim for more precise environmental terms and natural collocations, and proofread spelling. This would make your vocabulary more flexible and accurate while preserving the clear meaning of your argument.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “businesses that depend on international travel” and a conditional phrase in “People who live far away… may find it difficult.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical and punctuation errors are present. The sentence beginning “in my opinion” starts with a lowercase letter, and “through this” should also begin with a capital after the full stop. In the conclusion, “instead of flying People can…” needs punctuation to separate the sentences, while “People can take part in protecting ecosystem” is missing an article. There is also a sentence fragment-like transition in “For international arrangements…” followed by a lower-case “through.” Check sentence boundaries, articles, and capitalisation, and continue practising varied complex structures.
