Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the recent years a number of people have decided to reduce the number of air travels they perform to eventually stop flying altogether. I feel this development has advantages that outweigh the disadvantages.

The number of times a person flies accounts to amount of fuel utilised by the flights, the environmental hazard it is causing also financially it's quite expensive. Thus, if we focus upon finding alternative ways to avoid some of our travels we can make sure that our business and day to day activities are carried out efficiently. Example: Rather than booking a flight to a client location to visit their office, we can hold meetings or conferences online. This also helps to save a lot of time, money and effort in travelling.

There might be some disadvantages that a person might face in terms of business or personal life. Example: To create a good first impression we need to present ourselves in the best way possible. Also it is quite important to build a good connection with your fellow businesses. This can't be easily achieved in online means, as there is a huge gap between having a conversation online and expressing your views and pitching to the people in a meeting room.

Although we have some disadvantages, it is quite important to focus on the advantages as this will eventually lead to a healthier future for our upcoming generations. As, if we just exhaust all the resources we have it would create a negative impact on our surroundings. A small change today can bring greater impacts on our future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you believe the environmental benefits outweigh the disadvantages. You address both sides, using online meetings as an alternative to business flights and noting that in-person contact can help build business relationships. However, the environmental case is asserted more than explained: you mention fuel use and harm to the environment, but do not show how reducing flights would lessen emissions or why this benefit outweighs the personal and commercial costs. The disadvantages are also only briefly illustrated, and the conclusion refers broadly to future generations rather than weighing the two sides. Develop each main point with a specific explanation or example, especially the environmental benefits, to make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on benefits, one on disadvantages, and a concluding paragraph. The contrast between the two sides is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Thus,” “Although,” and “also” help signal relationships. However, some connections feel mechanical, particularly the repeated “Example:” openings, and the progression within paragraphs is sometimes abrupt. The sentence beginning “The number of times a person flies…” combines several points without clearly showing how they relate. The final paragraph repeats the general case for environmental protection rather than directly synthesising the comparison. Use smoother transitions, clearer links between claims and examples, and a conclusion that explicitly weighs the benefits against the disadvantages.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “alternative ways,” “first impression,” “resources,” and “negative impact.” These choices make the main ideas understandable, and you attempt some more formal expressions. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “air travels,” “accounts to amount of fuel,” “environmental hazard it is causing,” and “online means.” “Fellow businesses” is also unclear in context. These imprecisions sometimes make the reader pause, even though the intended meaning is generally recoverable. Aim for more natural topic-specific phrasing and check whether words combine idiomatically; for example, describe flights as consuming fuel and meetings as taking place online.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional and subordinate clauses, as in “if we focus upon finding alternative ways…” and “Although we have some disadvantages…”. The overall meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “In the recent years” has an unnecessary article, “the environmental hazard it is causing” lacks a clear grammatical connection to the preceding clause, and “As, if we just exhaust…” is an incorrectly punctuated and incomplete construction. There are also issues with articles and sentence boundaries in “Example: Rather than…” and “Example: To create…”. To improve, form complete sentences around examples, avoid placing a comma after “as,” and check article use and clause structure when combining ideas.
