IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people have decided to reduce the number of times they fly every year or to stop flying altogether.
Do you think the environmental benefits of this development outweigh the disadvantages for individuals and businesses?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Some citizens have aimed to decline the frequency of flying yearly or to completely abandon flying in order to preserve the environment. I believe that environmental benefits of this initiative can not surpass the demerits caused individually or collectively.
Air travelling is not the crucial factor in environmental crisis. The substantial harm is inflicted to the environment from the consumption of non renewable resources for the generation of energy to power industries and then waste from these factories is being disposed into water reserviors without proper treatment. Therefore, even flying from air is being reduced to a considerable value the expected outcome would still not be achieved. The other factors which are agressively polluting the environment should be overcomed
Conversely, this development would have numerous impact on individual lifestyle and business operations.
Substantial time would be consumed in travelling from one place to another and it will damp the pace of economic development. The business sector will be dramatically affected by this initiative as journey from other available transports will take extended time and will lead to delay in business operations. Due to the lengthy and hectic travel, individuals would get tired and will require more rest time to resume their operations efficiently. In past, before the advent of aeroplanes, humans have other sort of transports but major concern of humanity was to eliminate the distances and dimish the demanding nature of journeys which was possible due to air travel.
In conclusion, the merits of this appraoch would not be sufficient to dominate the demerits caused to individuals and businesses so humans should priortize trying to overcome those circumstances which are major contributed towards pollutions and environmental harm instead of avoiding those things which are meant for human development.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear from the introduction and conclusion: you believe the environmental gains from flying less would not outweigh the costs to people and businesses. You address both sides, noting other sources of pollution and the effects on travel time, business operations, and individual fatigue. This covers the task, but the environmental argument is less fully developed than the disadvantages: the claim that aviation is not a crucial factor is asserted without evidence or comparison, and the discussion of factory waste does not explain how reducing flights would affect emissions. The historical point about pre-aircraft travel also needs a clearer link to present-day impacts. To strengthen the response, support each main claim with a specific example and explain the trade-offs more precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, a paragraph presenting the environmental argument, a paragraph on disadvantages, and a conclusion that restates your view. Connectors such as “Therefore,” “Conversely,” and “In conclusion” help signal the direction of the argument. The overall progression is understandable, but some links between ideas are abrupt: the discussion moves from factory pollution to the effect of reducing flights without explaining the connection, and the historical comparison appears without being integrated into the business argument. The first body paragraph also ends without a concluding link to your position. Develop clearer topic sentences and use references or transitions to show how each example supports the central claim.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “environmental crisis,” “non-renewable resources,” “economic development,” and “business operations.” There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “the advent of aeroplanes.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “decline the frequency” would be more naturally expressed as “reduce the frequency,” while “journey from other available transports” is unclear. Spelling errors such as “reserviors,” “agressively,” and “appraoch” also detract from control. Aim to choose familiar, accurate collocations before reaching for more elaborate wording, and proofread spelling and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “even flying … is being reduced … the expected outcome would still not be achieved” and a relative clause in “those circumstances which are major contributed.” Meaning is generally recoverable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. For example, “this development would have numerous impact” needs plural agreement, and “In past … humans have other sort of transports” has problems with articles, tense, and number. The long sentence beginning “The substantial harm is inflicted” also combines several ideas in a way that makes the structure difficult to follow. Work on subject–verb agreement, consistent tense, articles, and sentence boundaries while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
