IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people have decided to reduce the number of times they fly every year or to stop flying altogether.
Do you think the environmental benefits of this development outweigh the disadvantages for individuals and businesses?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some individuals tend to deduct or permanently stop the amount of flights they take each year. Although it benefits the ecosystem, it also creates negative impact on the people and enterprises. I will discuss both views but personally I think that this development is significant for the nature and biodiversity.
One of the great advantage of airplanes is less time-consumption. Individuals can travel to destinations that are geographically distant in a short span of time . For businesses, time is crucial and plane reduces a significant amount of time than any other vehicles. Also, it is convenient for all as it is safer than any vehicle and only by this, a person can travel to any of the country. So, it is beneficial for both the tourists and the international trading. For instance, a person from Bangladesh can travel to China for his enterprise only by the aeroplane, and distance of thousand kilometres can be travelled in a matter of time.
On the other hand, planes use elements that are harmful for nature. It uses galons of oil for a single ride, and it emits carbon-di-oxide and other harmful substances that directly affects the ecosystem. For this reason, biodiversity is degrading and several species including humans are facing difficulties. Also, the cost of flight tickets are expensive in terms of other options like buses and trains. It is also a reason for climate change and global warming. Although it is not visible in the naked eye, it is slowly degrading the overall environment. For instance, airplanes uses non-renewable energy sources to fly and someday it will not be available in the nature.
In conclusion, airplanes uses oil to fly which is only available in nature, and the outcome it gives is destroying the ecosystem. I believe that, people should stop using flights more, rather they should use alternatives like trains and ships and make it more mainstream. It would be cost-effective and also a positive approach towards sustaining the nature.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both sides of the question and state a clear view: flying has benefits for travel and business, but reducing it is important for nature. The examples about travelling from Bangladesh to China and aircraft emissions help make the discussion relevant. However, the comparison of whether environmental benefits outweigh the disadvantages is not fully developed. The first body paragraph lists speed, safety and convenience, while the environmental paragraph discusses emissions and resource use, but you do not weigh their relative importance in enough detail. Some claims, such as flights being safer than any other vehicle or biodiversity loss being caused by flying, would benefit from explanation or more precise support. Develop the trade-off explicitly and connect each example to your final judgement.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for advantages and environmental concerns, and a conclusion that restates your position. Linking phrases such as “On the other hand,” “For instance,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the main stages. However, some connections are mechanical, and the progression within paragraphs could be clearer. In the first body paragraph, the points about speed, safety, tourism and international trade are placed together without showing how they relate or which is most important. The conclusion also introduces trains and ships without developing these alternatives earlier. Use clearer topic sentences and transitions that show comparison, and make sure each paragraph’s supporting details build towards your answer.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “biodiversity,” “ecosystem,” “non-renewable energy sources,” and “climate change.” These choices communicate the subject clearly, and you attempt some less common expressions. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “deduct … the amount of flights” does not express reducing flights, “less time-consumption” is awkward, and “galons of oil” contains a spelling error. Phrases such as “available in the nature” and “visible in the naked eye” also need more natural forms. Aim to learn vocabulary in common combinations and check spelling and word forms. More precise language for emissions and environmental effects would strengthen the argument.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including a concession in “Although it benefits the ecosystem…” and a relative clause in “which is only available in nature.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Subject–verb agreement is inconsistent in “planes use” followed by “It uses” and “airplanes uses”; plural subjects also need plural verbs in “the cost of flight tickets are.” Articles and sentence construction need attention in phrases such as “only by this, a person can travel to any of the country.” Punctuation and spacing are occasionally inaccurate, including the space before the full stop in “time .” Practise checking agreement, articles and sentence boundaries while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
