IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people have decided to reduce the number of times they fly every year or to stop flying altogether.

Do you think the environmental benefits of this development outweigh the disadvantages for individuals and businesses?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

People are concerned about environmental challanges that our planet is facing, So some of them have decided to lesser or stop the annual frequency of their air trips.

Environmental pollution is playing a major role in climate change and global warming. The smoke produced by the fuel used in air traffic is a big contributing factor to the air pollution. I think this mindset of people, to limit their flying trips, can help environment to some extent. It depends on the alternatives which people are using instead of flying. When individuals are traveling through electric trains or other types of electric vehicles instead of aircrafts, then the significant environmental benefits can be achieved. Using petroleum dependent vehicles for transport does not benefit the transition from air to land transport rather it will take more time.

Flying has obvious advantages for businesses and individuals in terms of comfort and time saving. Mostly the businessmen travel to have meetings, and to visit their customers. Reduction in frequency of flying is beneficial if it is not distirbing their work. This can be easily manageable by getting the same task done via onlie platforms; for example having a meeting online. For the businesses which need physical appearances, people can easily adjust all their tasks around one flying trip instead of many by proper planning. This transition can outweigh or at least equal the advantages for individuals and businesses using air transport.

In the conclusion, limiting the number of flights will have obvious benefits when the electric vehicles or online platforms are used as an alternatives. I believe, "less is more". Something is better than nothing. People should try to minimise their air trips. They will definitely see environmental benefits which would also result in favour for individuals and businesses.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both sides of the question and state a clear view: reducing flights can help the environment, particularly when people use electric transport or online meetings. You also recognise disadvantages such as the time-saving and convenience air travel offers. These are relevant points, but some are developed more fully than others. The environmental argument is conditional on alternatives, yet the response does not explain the scale of aviation’s impact or give a concrete example. Likewise, the claim that businesses can combine tasks into one trip is useful but briefly explained. The conclusion repeats your position rather than weighing the benefits against the disadvantages in detail. Develop each main point with a specific example and make the comparison more explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: it introduces the issue, discusses environmental effects, considers the practical advantages of flying, and ends with a conclusion. Paragraphs generally have clear purposes, and links such as “When,” “For example,” and “In the conclusion” help readers follow the argument. This organisation already shows some flexibility, but cohesion is occasionally mechanical or unclear. For instance, “This transition can outweigh or at least equal the advantages” does not clearly identify which transition or advantages are meant, and the conclusion’s “They” could refer to people or businesses. Some ideas also move quickly from one point to another without a clear bridge. Use more precise referencing and connect each example directly to the claim it supports.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “climate change,” “global warming,” “air traffic,” “electric vehicles,” and “physical appearances.” These terms make the subject clear, and phrases such as “frequency of flying” and “proper planning” show attempts to express ideas beyond basic vocabulary. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “lesser … the annual frequency,” “petroleum dependent vehicles,” and “as an alternatives.” Spelling errors such as “challanges,” “distirbing,” and “onlie” also reduce accuracy. These issues do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim for standard collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, use “reduce the number of flights” and “fossil-fuel-powered vehicles.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “When individuals are traveling … then the significant environmental benefits can be achieved” and a relative clause in “businesses which need physical appearances.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “People are concerned …, So” incorrectly capitalises the conjunction after a comma, while “when … then” is an awkward construction in this conditional sentence. In “the electric vehicles or online platforms are used as an alternatives,” the article and plural form do not agree. There are also some punctuation and sentence-boundary issues. Review agreement, articles, and punctuation, and vary complex structures while keeping each sentence controlled.
