IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people have decided to reduce the number of times they fly every year or to stop flying altogether.
Do you think the environmental benefits of this development outweigh the disadvantages for individuals and businesses?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The environmental pollution and global warming are widely debated issues today. Carbon emissions are blamed for most of global warming nowadays. Due to growing awarness of carbon emissions and global warming many people decided to reduce air travel as aeroplane causes carbon emissions. There are many advantages and disadvantages of this view. I think disadvantages are far more than advantages. I suggest to control other more potentially responsible causes of environmetal pollution rather than air travel.
On the one hand, people supporters of avoiding air travel think this can reduce enviromental pollution and carbon diaoxide released from aeroplanes due to combustion of fossil fuel. Moreover, proponent of this view suggest using enviromental frindly transport for travel like ecletric or solar operated vehicles instead of air fly to lessen the carbon emissions. Furthermore, this action will promote awarness among other people to save environment.
On the other hand, there are many disadvantages of avoiding air travel. It has adverse consequences in terms of financial losses for many businesses, such as food delivery to remote areas of the world. In addition avoiding aeroplane can have negative effects on social and personal relationships, as it may weaken family relationships which require urgent attendance of family events or emergencies.Critics also think that reducing or stoping air travel will not be effective in reducing air pollution. In addition, they think that there are many alternative issues which need to be addressed with seriousness to control environmental pollution rather than avoiding air travel.
In conclusion, I think that stopping or reducing number of times of fly, will do more harm than good. I suggest that international authorities should pass legislation to control use of fossil fuels for industrial and transport purposes. The attention should be given to promote awareness on global warming and encourage use of renewable energy sources for domestic and industrial use rather than avoiding air travel.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both sides of the question and state a clear view: “disadvantages are far more than advantages.” Relevant points include emissions from aircraft, business losses, and the effect on family relationships. However, the comparison is not fully developed: the environmental benefits are described briefly, while the disadvantages are asserted more than demonstrated. For example, “food delivery to remote areas” is a potentially useful business example, but you do not explain how reduced flights would affect it or how significant that impact would be. The claim that other causes are more responsible for pollution also needs evidence or a specific comparison. Develop each main point with a clear explanation or example, and make the weighing of benefits against disadvantages more explicit.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two sides, and a conclusion that restates your position. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” helps readers follow the argument. This gives the essay a coherent progression, though some linking is mechanical and ideas within paragraphs are not always connected smoothly. For instance, the environmental benefits paragraph moves from emissions to alternative transport and then awareness without showing how these points relate. The conclusion also introduces legislation and renewable energy without first developing these proposals in the body. Use clearer links between claims and explanations, and ensure each paragraph develops a focused line of reasoning.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “carbon emissions,” “fossil fuel,” “renewable energy sources,” and “financial losses,” which helps communicate the subject. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “adverse consequences” and “social and personal relationships.” However, spelling errors and inaccurate word choices are noticeable and sometimes make the reader pause: examples include “awarness,” “enviromental,” “frindly,” and “stoping.” Some collocations are also unnatural, such as “people supporters of avoiding air travel” and “number of times of fly.” Aim for accurate, natural combinations and check spelling carefully. A smaller set of well-controlled topic expressions would make your argument clearer and more precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “as,” “which,” and “rather than,” and most of the argument remains understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with articles, verb forms, and sentence construction. For example, “as aeroplane causes” needs an article and plural agreement, while “reducing or stoping air travel will not be effective” uses an inconsistent verb form. The sentence beginning “people supporters of avoiding air travel think” is also structurally unclear. Punctuation is occasionally missing, as in the sentence ending “emergencies.Critics.” To improve control, check subject–verb agreement, use parallel forms in paired constructions, and proofread sentence boundaries and punctuation.
