Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

A number of individuals have decided to take the less flights per year. This situation has few merits in terms of less air pollution and time saving, yet it can be disadvantageous as problem like increase in road transport could come up.I strongly agree to the former view.

On the one hand, if individuals decides to take less flights per year, it will reduce the carbon emission in the air by the aeroplanes because of the less fuel oil consumption .As a result, the air quality will improve and global threats to environment like global warming and ozone layer depletion could be limited. For instance, if we calculate the daily fuel oil consumption by aeroplanes ,it will be in thousand of gallons per day but if citizens take less flights as compared to routine, then it will reduce the burning fuel consumption to certain extent and toxic elements quantity in the air will be in limits.Furthermore, if people choose to take less flights ,it will also save a lot of time which they can utilize in other areas of lives. As a result, they can improve their quality of life and they will have enough time to maintain work life balace.

On the other hand, if people choose to take less flights then it put a burden on the local road transport system. As a result, the number of vehicles on road will increase significantly and problems like traffic congestion and smoke emission will rise.It results in time wastage and mental fatigue of citizens hence life production and work efficiency will be be affected also.

Overall, the advantages of this are more than than the drawbacks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you believe the environmental benefits outweigh the disadvantages, and you discuss both reduced emissions and pressure on road transport. The explanation of aviation’s fuel use and the possible increase in congestion is relevant to the question. However, the response does not fully develop the comparison between environmental benefits and disadvantages for individuals and businesses. The time-saving point is not clearly connected to reducing flights, and the disadvantages focus mainly on road users rather than businesses or the wider effects on individuals. The examples are also general rather than specific. To strengthen the response, explain more directly why the environmental gains are more significant than the costs, and develop at least one concrete example for each side.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph presenting benefits, a paragraph on disadvantages, and a brief conclusion. The contrastive signposts “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” help readers follow the main direction of the argument. Within paragraphs, however, several ideas are joined mechanically with repeated “As a result” and “Furthermore,” and some links between claims are unclear. For example, the move from fewer flights to “save a lot of time” needs explanation, while the final conclusion does not recap the main comparison. Improve progression by grouping related points, using clearer cause-and-effect links, and making the conclusion explicitly weigh the environmental benefits against the transport drawbacks.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “carbon emission,” “air quality,” “global warming,” “traffic congestion,” and “work efficiency.” These terms make the subject clear, and some attempts at more formal phrasing are evident. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “take the less flights,” “fuel oil consumption,” “life production,” and “global threats to environment.” Repetition of “less flights” and “As a result” also limits flexibility. Aim for more precise, natural expressions and check word forms and collocations. For example, use “take fewer flights,” “aviation fuel consumption,” and “productivity” where appropriate; this will make the argument sound more fluent and academically suitable.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including conditional clauses such as “if individuals decides to take less flights” and longer cause-and-effect sentences. The overall meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. In the quoted conditional, the subject and verb do not agree, and “it put a burden” should use a matching verb form. There are also article, plural, and punctuation problems, including “the air”/“environment” usage and missing spaces after full stops. Some sentences become difficult to follow because several clauses are joined without clear punctuation. Practise subject–verb agreement, countable plurals, and sentence boundaries, then proofread for commas and full stops while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
