IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people have decided to reduce the number of times they fly every year or to stop flying altogether.
Do you think the environmental benefits of this development outweigh the disadvantages for individuals and businesses?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some people have made a choice to reduce the number of flights they take annually or to avoid flying entirely. It is better for our ecosystem as it can decrease pollution and prevent the world from energy crisis. On the other hand, it will cause lag of transport and more time consumption from individuals and businesses. I think its benefits outweigh the disadvantages so it is better to avoid flying frequently.
Avoiding to fly frquently can result in less consumption of oil and less pollution. Flights need high amount of oil as compare to other means of transport which leads to high energy consumption and avoiding it can prevent the world from shortage of energy. Furthermore, aeroplanes are contributing to pollution which is contaminating our atmosphere and less flights will result in decrease of those pollutants in the air.
In contrast, aeroplanes are convenient and instant mode of travel and avoiding it will produce circumstances like delays in reaching somewhere and also cause waste of resources. For instance, if an entrepreneur has an important meeting abroad and he is still figuring out alternatives of aeroplanes then it will delay his business results and will cause dissatisfaction of investors. It will also result in wastage of resources like if less people travel through air so aeroplanes will have to spend their resources on less people which is a wastage.
To conclude, I will say that using air transportation less frequently is better instead of completely avoiding the use of aeroplanes. A better statement could be that "People should fly whenever they need to and avoid flying unnecessarily.".

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both sides of the question and state a clear view: the environmental benefits outweigh the disadvantages, while your conclusion sensibly distinguishes reducing flights from stopping altogether. The points about lower oil use and pollution are relevant, and the entrepreneur’s delayed meeting gives a concrete example of a business cost. However, some ideas are less fully developed than others. The claim that flying less can “prevent the world from energy crisis” is broad and would be stronger with a clearer explanation of aviation’s contribution and the likely scale of the benefit. The disadvantage about aircraft using resources for fewer passengers is also asserted rather than explained. Develop these points and compare their significance more explicitly to make your argument more convincing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph on environmental benefits, a contrasting paragraph on disadvantages, and a conclusion. The progression is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the other hand,” “Furthermore,” and “To conclude” help readers recognise the argument’s stages. This meets the lower-band expectations securely and shows some features of stronger organisation. However, connections between ideas can feel mechanical, and the final paragraph introduces the distinction between reducing flights and avoiding them entirely without developing it earlier. The sentence about aircraft resources also needs a clearer link to the business disadvantage being discussed. Use more precise referencing and transitions that show how each point supports your overall comparison.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “pollution,” “energy consumption,” “investors,” and “air transportation.” There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “contaminating our atmosphere.” However, several inaccurate or unnatural choices limit precision: “lag of transport,” “high amount of oil as compare to,” and “waste of resources” do not express the intended ideas naturally. Spelling errors such as “frquently” and “aeroplanes” being used inconsistently also affect control. Aim for accurate collocations and choose words that describe the consequence precisely; for example, distinguish delays to travel from inefficiency in operating flights. Proofreading would help remove avoidable spelling slips.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “as,” “which,” and “if,” and your meaning is generally clear. Some sentences are controlled, such as “Furthermore, aeroplanes are contributing to pollution which is contaminating our atmosphere.” There are, however, some grammatical errors in sentence construction and forms. For example, “Avoiding to fly” should use a gerund pattern such as “Avoiding flying,” while “if less people travel” needs “fewer people.” In “if an entrepreneur has an important meeting abroad and he is still figuring out alternatives,” the conditional relationship is unclear and the sentence would benefit from restructuring. Review article use and clause punctuation as well, particularly around relative clauses. Greater accuracy across these structures would strengthen the response.
