IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The given diagram demonstrate the step by step method of how bambo plant is used to make fabric out of it.

Bambo is a plant that is grown in spring season and has varius uses. It's major use is in fabric industry where it went under diffent steps icluding harvesting, cutting, going through filters and substances to get a yarn from it which is further utilized to form clothes pieces and other stuffs.

Farmers harvest the plant in autumn season and cut it to small pieces and then they crush these strips toand fluid is produced(liqiud pulp), secondly it want through filters that separates the long fibers from fluid and afterwards these fibers are softened water and amine oxide are add into it and spin it to make yarn,Then weaving is done to make fabric this fabric is further used to form a different piece of clothing for instance shirts and socks. That's how a plant is utilized to get a fabric.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the main stages in the correct order, from planting in spring and harvesting in autumn through processing the fibres, spinning yarn, weaving fabric and producing clothing. The overview also identifies bamboo’s use in fabric production, and the final examples of shirts and socks match the diagram. This is a relevant account of the process, although some stages are less fully explained: for example, the crushing stage is difficult to follow in “they crush these strips toand fluid is produced,” and the diagram’s final clothing stage could be stated more clearly as the outcome. To strengthen the response, give a concise overview of the process’s start and end, then describe each stage precisely, including that water and amine oxide are added to soften the fibres.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response follows the process broadly in sequence, and words such as “afterwards,” “then” and “for instance” help connect stages. However, the information is compressed into two long paragraphs, with most of the process placed in one extended sentence. This makes the progression harder to track, particularly around “secondly it want through filters” and the transition from softening to spinning and weaving. Some linking is also mechanical or unclear, and the opening paragraph repeats information that could be organised more effectively. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and the detailed stages, and divide the sequence into shorter sentences with clear links such as “Next” and “Finally.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use several relevant process terms, including “harvesting,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibers,” “yarn” and “weaving,” so the reader can generally understand the subject. There is also some attempt at more specific vocabulary, such as “amine oxide.” However, spelling errors and imprecise or awkward choices are noticeable: “bambo,” “varius,” “diffent,” “stuffs” and “clothes pieces” reduce accuracy and naturalness. Phrases such as “went under diffent steps” and “get a fabric” are also not idiomatic for describing a manufacturing process. Build a more precise process vocabulary and check spelling; for example, use “undergoes several stages” and “garments” rather than informal or unclear expressions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex structures, including a relative clause in “a plant that is grown in spring season” and a sequence joined with “and then.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but grammatical control is uneven. Examples include “The given diagram demonstrate,” where the subject and verb do not agree, and “these fibers are softened water and amine oxide are add into it,” where the clause structure and verb forms are faulty. Missing articles and punctuation also affect clarity, as in “in spring season” and the run-on sequence beginning “afterwards these fibers.” Use shorter, complete sentences, check subject–verb agreement and passive forms, and punctuate each process stage clearly.
