IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the process of manufacturing fabric from bamboo palnt.

Overall, the diagram shows that the fabric from bamboo tree is manufactured in nine different steps.

At first, the bamboo plant is sowed in the spring season. After sowing, when plant become mature it is harvestd in the autumn season. The bamboo plant is then cut into small strips with the help of cutting machine. After cutting the strips are crushed in the machine to make a liquid pulp. In the next step, the liquid is transfer into filteration machine to separate long fibers and impurities from the liquid..

In the six step, the bambo fibers are soften with the help of water and amino oxide. The soften fiber is then transferred into the spinning machine to make a a thread like structure called yarn. After making the yarn, it is shifted to the weaving machine to make fabric. In the final step, the fabric is formed with the help of weaving machine.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You cover the main sequence from planting and autumn harvesting through processing, spinning and weaving, and your overview correctly identifies nine stages. Most details match the diagram, including crushing the strips into pulp and softening fibres with water and amine oxide. However, the final stage is misreported: the diagram shows finished clothing items, whereas you say fabric is formed by weaving again. The filtering stage is also described as removing “impurities,” which is not specified; it separates long fibres from liquid. Your overview is accurate but general, and the account could distinguish more clearly between the stages that produce yarn, fabric and finished garments. Reporting these endpoints precisely would make the summary more complete and accurate.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response follows the process in a sensible order and uses clear sequencing expressions such as “At first,” “After,” “In the next step” and “In the final step.” The paragraphing into an overview and a detailed account also helps the reader follow the information. However, the description is presented as one long body paragraph, and some transitions feel mechanical because nearly every stage begins with a time or sequence marker. The reference in “After sowing, when plant become mature” is also not fully clear, and the final two sentences repeat the weaving-to-fabric idea rather than progressing to the diagram’s clothing stage. Grouping the stages into clearer sections and using more varied links would improve cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “crushed,” “filter,” “fibers,” “yarn” and “weaving machine,” so the manufacturing sequence is generally understandable. There are also attempts at more specific terms, such as “liquid pulp” and “thread-like structure.” However, several word-choice and spelling problems reduce precision: “palnt,” “harvestd,” “bambo,” and “filteration” are misspelled, while “amino oxide” does not accurately reproduce the diagram’s “amine oxide.” Phrases such as “the fabric from bamboo tree” and “a a thread like structure” are also awkward or repetitive. Aim for accurate process collocations and check spelling, especially for technical terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple sentences and some more complex forms, including the time clause “when plant become mature” and the passive construction “are crushed … to make a liquid pulp.” This gives the account some structural variety, and the sequence remains understandable. However, errors occur in verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence construction. For example, “the bamboo plant is sowed” should use the correct past participle, and “when plant become mature it is harvestd” lacks an article and has incorrect agreement and passive form. “The liquid is transfer” also needs a past participle. There is a duplicated article in “a a thread,” and the double full stop after “liquid” is inaccurate punctuation. Review passive forms and singular/plural agreement.
