IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagrams displays the process of how fabric is manufactured by bamboo.

It is clear from the flow chart that farmers plants the bamboo plant harvest the plant which is taken to a clothing industry to refine the plant and convert it to fabric.

The bamboo plant is planted in a fertile soil amd the best season to plant it is during the spring season. Once the bamboo has reach its point of harvesting the farmer will harvest the plant during the season of autumn. The bamboo is cut into strips using saw then afterwars the strips are crushed to make liquid pulp. The liquid pulp is then put in a filter to seperate long fibers from liquid then the fibers will then soften and once the fibers are soft water and amine oxide are added to the softed fiber.

After that process, the mixture will be spinning to make yarns. Afterwards the yarn will be weaved to make fabrics which can now be used to makes clothes like shirts and socks etc.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the main stages from planting and autumn harvesting through processing, spinning and weaving, and you include the seasons and the purpose of filtering. The final reference to clothing is also supported by the diagram. However, the overview is not fully accurate: it says the bamboo is taken to a clothing industry, which is not shown, and it does not clearly summarise the process as a whole. The description of softening is also confused: the diagram shows water and amine oxide being added to soften the fibres, rather than being added after they have softened. To strengthen the response, give a concise, accurate overview of the progression from growing bamboo to finished garments, then report each stage without adding unsupported details.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response follows the process in the correct general order, and the paragraph break between the introduction and the detailed stages helps organise the information. Sequencing phrases such as “Once,” “then,” and “After that process” guide the reader through the stages. However, the overview is placed in a separate paragraph but is vague and includes an unsupported reference to a clothing industry, while the final paragraph combines several stages without clearly distinguishing them. Some linking is also mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “then.” Use a clearer overview and group the stages into logical sections, such as cultivation and processing, followed by yarn, fabric and clothing. More precise referencing would make the progression easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvest,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “filter,” “fibers,” “yarn” and “weaved,” so the reader can generally understand the stages. There are also attempts at more specific terms, such as “amine oxide.” However, several word-choice, spelling and word-form problems reduce precision: “manufactured by bamboo” is an awkward way to describe the material, “softed” is not the correct form, and “seperate” and “afterwars” are misspelled. “The bamboo plant” and “the plant” are also repeated where more varied references would help. Aim for accurate process collocations such as “made from bamboo” and “the fibres are softened,” and check spelling and forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a time clause beginning “Once the bamboo has reach its point of harvesting” and a sequence of stages joined with “then.” The overall meaning is usually clear, but some errors in agreement, verb forms, articles and sentence construction remain. For example, “The diagrams displays” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “farmers plants” and “the bamboo has reach” also show agreement or verb-form problems. In “the mixture will be spinning,” the passive construction is not formed correctly; use “the mixture is spun.” The long sentence describing cutting, crushing and filtering would be clearer if divided into shorter sentences. Practise accurate passive forms, which are especially useful for describing processes.
