IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The process depicts the utilisation of bamboo for fabric manufacturing and development.

Overall, it is a nine step process explaining from the ground level that is cultivation and harvesting of bamboo to the end process of weaving the fabric into clothes.

The first step is to cultivate the bamboo during spring and wait till autmn for harvesting since its the ideal period. The bamboo is cut into fragments calleed strips and later crushed to squeeze out the liquid pulp. The next step is filtration, where the liquid is filtered out from long fibres.Later the fibres are softened by addition of of water and amine oxide.

The fibres that have been softened are spun to make yarn which is later weaved to make the fabric. Now this fabric is utilised to design or manufacture clothes like shirts and bottom along with accessories such as socks. It is only utilised for clothing but also to make other products such as bamboo ropes and bags

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the main sequence from planting and harvesting through fibre processing, spinning and weaving, and your overview correctly identifies the process as having nine steps. The seasonal details and the addition of water and amine oxide are also reported accurately. However, the final stage is described as making clothes, while the diagram shows clothing as the finished output after fabric is made; this distinction could be clearer. The claim that bamboo is also used for “ropes and bags” is not shown in the diagram and should be omitted. Some stages, particularly crushing and filtering, are mentioned but not explained precisely. A more complete account of the diagram’s stages, without adding unsupported products, would make the summary more fully grounded in the visual.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall progression: an overview is followed by the early processing stages and then the final stages. Sequencing expressions such as “The first step,” “The next step,” and “Later” help the reader follow the process, and the paragraph breaks broadly support this organisation. This already gives the report a coherent structure. However, some links between stages are abrupt, and the final paragraph moves from fabric production to unsupported products without a clear transition. The overview’s phrase “from the ground level” is also unclear as a description of the process. Use more precise stage-to-stage links and keep each paragraph focused on the diagram’s sequence to make cohesion more flexible and less dependent on basic sequencing phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “cultivate,” “harvesting,” “filtration,” “fibres,” “spun,” and “weaved,” so the stages are generally understandable. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “utilisation” and “manufacturing.” However, some choices are awkward or imprecise: “ground level” does not naturally describe the beginning of a process, “squeeze out the liquid pulp” is not an accurate description of crushing, and “bottom” is unclear for a clothing item. “Weaved” is less suitable here than “woven.” Spelling slips such as “autmn” and “calleed” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise process collocations and check spelling, while avoiding claims about products not shown in the diagram.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple sentences and some more developed structures, including the overview clause “explaining from the ground level…” and the relative clause “where the liquid is filtered out from long fibres.” The sequence remains understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems are present. For example, “a nine step process” needs a hyphen, and “explaining from the ground level that is cultivation” is an awkward and incomplete construction. In “The first step is to cultivate the bamboo during spring and wait till autmn,” the subject and verb pattern is unclear because the bamboo cannot “wait.” There are also missing spaces after full stops and an unnecessary repetition in “addition of of water.” Use clearer passive forms for the stages and proofread sentence boundaries and articles.
