IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The process demonstrates steps of formation of thread from bamboo.
As an overall trend, the whole production consists of 9 steps till the production in which it initiates with the planting of bamboo and ends with the formation of fabric's product.
This process commences with the cultivation of bamboo in fields and then it get harvested by labour in the autumn season for furthur processing. After that it's sent for the formation of small strips by a cutter blade from harvested bamboo crop and then it gets crushed to form the liquid pulp.
In the fifth step the filteration process takes place in which the long fibers are separated. and the long fibers then softenend by by a chemical process in which amine oxide and water is involved. Thereafter, yarn is obtained and is ready to become fabric and to be sold as manfacturing byproducts like shirts, soxes, etcetra.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as a sequence and report several key stages, including planting, autumn harvesting, cutting, crushing, filtering, softening, and producing yarn. However, the account is only partial: it does not clearly state that the yarn is woven into fabric before finished clothing is shown, and the overview says the process ends with a fabric product rather than the clothing depicted at the final stage. The claim that products are “to be sold” is not shown in the diagram. The response also falls three words short of the required minimum. To strengthen coverage, describe all nine stages accurately and give a concise overview of the start, transformation, and end product.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The stages are mostly presented in a sensible chronological order, and phrases such as “After that,” “In the fifth step,” and “Thereafter” help signal progression. The opening overview also gives the reader a general sense of the process. However, the response is arranged as only two paragraphs, with the second carrying nearly all the stage details, and the links between some steps are unclear. For example, “Thereafter, yarn is obtained and is ready to become fabric” skips the weaving stage and does not clearly connect the final products. The isolated full stop in “separated. and” also disrupts flow. Use clearer paragraphing and connect each stage explicitly without relying on repetitive sequencing phrases.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “cultivation,” “harvested,” “liquid pulp,” “filteration,” and “fibers,” so the reader can follow the general subject. However, the range and precision are uneven, and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing this diagram. “Formation of thread” is less precise than “production of yarn,” while “manfacturing byproducts” misrepresents the clothing shown as the final output. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “furthur,” “softenend,” “soxes,” and “etcetra.” Prefer the diagram’s exact process terms, such as “spin,” “weave,” and “finished garments,” and check spelling carefully to make the description clearer and more natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response attempts a mixture of simple and longer sentences, including clauses linked with “which” and “in which.” However, control is inconsistent, and several sentence structures contain errors that make the description less clear. For example, “it get harvested” has incorrect subject–verb agreement, and “the long fibers then softenend” lacks a correctly formed passive verb. The opening phrase “steps of formation of thread” also has an awkward grammatical structure, while “it initiates with” does not clearly express that the process begins with planting. Punctuation is sometimes faulty, as in “separated. and.” Practise accurate passive forms for process descriptions (“is harvested,” “are softened”) and check agreement and sentence boundaries.
