IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given diagram illustrates the process how fabric is produced from bamboo.
Overall, the process involves nine stages for producing fabric from bamboo starting with planting bamboo plants and ending with making clothing such as t-shirts, socks.
At the first stage, bamboo plants are grown in the field. After maturing the plants, they are harvested in autumn and cut into strips by saw. Subsequently, the strips are crushed to make liquid pulp and followed by the liquid pulp are filtered to seperate long fibres from liquid.
Following this, the fibres are softened by adding water and amine oxide with fibres. Once the fibres are softened , they are spinned to make yarn which will be used as a raw materials to make fabric. At the penultimate stage, the produced yarn is used to make fabric. Finally clothing are made from the produced fabric and bought by the people for wearing.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the main stages and provide a clear overview, identifying planting as the start and clothing as the end product. The sequence from harvesting and cutting through pulping, filtering, softening, spinning and weaving is generally accurate, and you include the specific autumn harvest and the water and amine oxide. This gives the reader a sound account of the process. Some details are less precise: “After maturing the plants” adds a stage not stated in the diagram, while “bought by the people for wearing” is not shown. The overview could also summarise the process more meaningfully by distinguishing the initial agricultural stages from the later fibre and textile production stages.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is arranged in a sensible sequence, with an overview followed by the early and later stages. Connectors such as “At the first stage,” “Subsequently,” “Following this,” and “Finally” help guide the reader through the process. However, some links are mechanically formed or unclear, particularly “and followed by the liquid pulp are filtered,” which makes the transition into filtering difficult to follow. The paragraph break before the later processing stages is useful, but the first body paragraph contains several steps in one long sentence. Use clearer sentence boundaries and more natural transitions between stages to make the progression smoother and cohesion less noticeable.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “crushed,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” “softened,” “yarn,” and “penultimate stage.” These terms communicate the main production steps, and the response generally remains understandable. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “the process how fabric is produced” is not idiomatic, “spinned” is not the correct form of “spin,” and “raw materials” is imprecise when referring to yarn as a single input. There are also spelling errors such as “seperate.” Aim for accurate process collocations and check spelling and word forms; this would make the vocabulary more precise and natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex forms, including time clauses such as “After maturing the plants” and “Once the fibres are softened,” and most stages remain understandable. However, some grammatical errors affect clarity and control. For example, “the liquid pulp are filtered” has subject–verb disagreement and an awkward passive construction; “clothing are made” also needs agreement, and “which will be used as a raw materials” has a number mismatch. The opening phrase “illustrates the process how” is structurally faulty, while spacing before commas and full stops is inconsistent. Practise accurate passive forms and agreement in process descriptions, and proofread sentence structure and punctuation.
