IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The process given illustrates the manufacture of products made using bamboo fabric.
Overall, there are nine stages beginning with planting of bamboo plants and ending with production of goods made using bamboo. The main stages are harvesting, crushing, filtering, spinning, and weaving.
Initially, the process starts with planting bamboo plants in spring season. Farmers harverst bamboo plants in autumn, and collect them for further procedure. After harvesting, they are cutted into strips, which are then crushed to produce liquid pulp.
After crushing process, filtering is applied to separate long fibres from the liquid produced. Fibres are then soften by adding water and amine oxied, which is further spinned to create yarn. In the final stages, yarn is used to weave that transforms it into fabric. Finally, fabric is used to create various products for retail.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the process as having nine stages and give a clear overview from planting to finished goods, then describe the main sequence from harvesting through fabric production. Most details match the diagram, including the seasons, the conversion of strips into liquid pulp, and the addition of water and amine oxide. However, the final stage is described only as goods for retail; the diagram specifically shows clothing items, a T-shirt and socks. Some stages, particularly the filtering and softening steps, are reported briefly rather than fully explained. The response also falls 15 words short of the required minimum, so there is limited space to develop the later stages and provide a fuller account. Add a little more precise detail without inventing information.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is organised into an introduction, an overview and two chronological paragraphs, and the process is generally easy to follow. Sequencing phrases such as “Initially,” “After harvesting,” and “In the final stages” help guide the reader through the stages. This clear overall progression is a strength. To make the organisation more polished, avoid repeating “process” in phrases such as “the process starts” and “After crushing process,” and make links between stages more natural. The final sentence moves from fabric to retail products clearly, but could connect more explicitly to the diagram’s last stage. The paragraphing and sequence are effective, though cohesion is not consistently smooth.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” “yarn,” and “weave,” which allows you to describe the main transformations. There is also some useful variation in verbs such as “produce,” “separate,” and “create.” However, several spelling and word-form errors reduce accuracy: “harverst,” “cutted,” “oxied,” and “spinned.” Some expressions are also awkward or imprecise, such as “further procedure” and “various products for retail.” Choose standard process collocations and check spelling carefully. More precise terms for the final products would also strengthen the description while keeping it grounded in the diagram.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “strips, which are then crushed” and a passive construction in “Fibres are then soften.” The sequence is usually understandable, but some errors in verb forms and sentence construction remain. For example, “they are cutted” should use the past participle “cut,” while “Fibres are then soften” needs “softened.” In “yarn is used to weave that transforms it into fabric,” the clause structure is unclear; a clearer version would be “the yarn is woven to produce fabric.” The opening phrase “beginning with planting of bamboo plants” also needs an article or a more natural gerund construction. Review passive forms and clause links to improve control.
