IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The diagram illustrates the manufacturing process of fabric from bamboo, and this process involves nine steps we will talk about it in the following paragraph.

Firstly, the bamboo plants are planted in the spring season and they are harvested in autumn season and also untill they get matured and it is done by both machines and also by humans. Afterthat, they are cutted into strips by a blade or cutter and then the strips are crushed to make liquid pulp. And, then the liquid is filtered to seprate long fibres from liquid.

Therefore, the separated fibres are softened by adding water and amine oxide. However, the fibre was spined to make yarn and it loks like a boll and then the yarn is weaved to make fabric while, in the last step the clothes are made by it

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the process as involving nine steps and report most of its main stages, including planting in spring, harvesting in autumn, crushing, filtering, softening, spinning and weaving. However, the response is under the required 150 words, and the overview is not clearly developed: the opening mainly announces that the process will be discussed rather than summarising its overall progression from cultivation to finished products. Some details are inaccurate or unsupported. The diagram does not say harvesting is done by both machines and humans, nor that the bamboo is harvested only once mature. The final stage shows clothing items, which you mention, but the account would be stronger if it clearly described the complete sequence and distinguished the fibre-processing stages from the final manufacture.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The stages are generally presented in the correct order, and paragraph breaks separate the early stages from later processing. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “then” and “in the last step” help the reader follow the process. However, the response has no clear overview paragraph, and the first sentence’s phrase “we will talk about it in the following paragraph” is an unnecessary signpost rather than useful task-focused organisation. Several links are mechanical or awkward, especially the repeated “and then” and the sentence beginning “However,” which does not express a contrast. The final sentence also joins several stages without clear punctuation. Group the process into logical phases and use accurate transitions to make the progression smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “liquid pulp,” “long fibres,” “yarn” and “fabric,” which allows the reader to understand the main production stages. There is some repetition of basic terms such as “process,” “make” and “then,” and several spelling or word-form errors reduce precision: “untill,” “cutted,” “seprate,” “spined,” “loks” and “boll.” Some choices are also imprecise, such as “blade or cutter” where the diagram shows a circular saw, and “the clothes are made by it,” which is unclear. Aim for accurate process verbs and concise collocations, for example “the fibres are spun into yarn” and “the fabric is made into clothing.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response communicates the broad sequence, but grammatical control is uneven. It relies heavily on long sentences joined with “and,” and attempts at more complex structures are often faulty. For example, “this process involves nine steps we will talk about it” combines clauses without appropriate punctuation or a linking structure, while “they are harvested in autumn season and also untill they get matured” has an unclear construction. There are also errors in verb forms and tense, including “they are cutted” and “the fibre was spined,” as well as missing articles in phrases such as “in autumn season.” Use consistent present simple passive forms for a process description, and separate each stage into clear sentences. This will improve accuracy and make the sequence easier to follow.
