IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the process of manufacturing fabric from bamboo plants several stages.

It is evident from the flowchart that the processing of raw bamboo to finishing into fabrics Through a series of distinct Mechanical and chemical stages. It follows nine different Steps starts with bamboo cultivation and ends with the manufacturing of products from bamboo fabrics.

The process began with planting of bamboo in spring because this is the suitable season to start cultivation of bamboo. After reaching the required size the bamboo is harvested in autumn season. The third process is to cutting bamboo perfectly into strips. Following these steps bamboo strips is crushed to produce liquid pulp. The next step is filtering it to distinguish fibers from existing liquid.

After completing these stages chemical processing is starting from #6. Fibers are mixed with water and amine Oxide to soften them. Here comes the stage spinning to convert them in Yam. The second last process is to weaving it for making fabric. Finally, the processing of making fabric from bamboo plant is done. Therefore, it's ready to manufacturing products such as T-shirt, pants and socks from bamboo fabric.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the main sequence from planting in spring through harvesting, processing, spinning and weaving, and you identify the overall start and end points. The overview also recognises that the process has nine stages and includes mechanical and chemical processing. However, some details are unclear or go beyond the diagram: it shows finished clothing as T-shirts and socks, not pants, and does not state that bamboo is harvested after reaching a “required size” or that spring is suitable for cultivation. The final stage is best described as producing clothing from the fabric, rather than simply saying the fabric-making process is done. Make the overview more precise and report only features shown in the visual.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is arranged in a clear introduction, overview and two process paragraphs, and the stages are generally presented in the correct order. Sequencing expressions such as “The third process,” “The next step” and “Finally” help the reader follow the flow. This gives the report a coherent overall progression. Some links are less smooth or precise, however: “After completing these stages chemical processing is starting from #6” interrupts the description, and “Here comes the stage” is conversational rather than a suitable formal transition. The reference in “Following these steps” is also broad. To strengthen cohesion, use concise links that show the relationship between stages and maintain a consistent formal reporting style.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a relevant range of process vocabulary, including “cultivation,” “harvested,” “filtering,” “pulp,” “soften” and “weaving,” which allows you to describe the diagram’s main operations. There are also attempts at more technical language, such as “chemical processing.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “finishing into fabrics,” “distinguish fibers from existing liquid” and “convert them in Yam.” “Yam” is a spelling error for “yarn,” and “perfectly” does not accurately describe the cutting stage. These slips do not prevent the reader from understanding the process, but more precise collocations would improve clarity. Prefer standard process terms such as “separate fibres from the liquid” and “spin the fibres into yarn.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including the overview sentence beginning “It is evident from the flowchart” and the time clause “After reaching the required size.” The sequence remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “several stages” needs a preposition, “It follows nine different Steps starts” has an incorrect verb construction, and “bamboo strips is crushed” has subject–verb disagreement. There are also problems with verb forms in “is to cutting” and “chemical processing is starting,” as well as missing articles in phrases such as “the suitable season.” Improve control by checking each sentence for a clear subject and finite verb, and use consistent present simple forms to describe the process.
