IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The process diagram illustrates how bamboo is transferred into fabric and subsequently used to produce clothing items.

Overall, the procedure consists of nine steps beginning with the cultivation of bamboo plants in the spring season and ending with the final products which made from it such as T-shirts and socks.

Firstly, bamboo plants are grown by farmers during the spring season and allowed to grow and finally harvested by the workers in the autumn season. After that, the plants are cut into small strips, using a sharp cutting tool. The strips are crushed to make a liquid pulp. After that, the mixture is filtered through a sieve to separate long fibers from liquid. After filtering, water and amine oxide are added for softening and prepared it for next step.

In the following stages, the soft mixture is spun to make yarn, weaving to make fabric products. Finally, many clothing products are made, including T-shirts and socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response gives a clear account of the process, with an overview identifying its start in spring and its end in clothing such as T-shirts and socks. It also reports the main transformation stages: cutting, crushing, filtering, softening, spinning and weaving. These details are generally consistent with the diagram. However, some stages are less fully described: the final step is presented as clothing production, but the transition from fabric to finished garments could be made clearer, and the filtering stage is described as using a “sieve,” which is not specified in the diagram. For a stronger response, report only visible details and explain the sequence more precisely, including that water and amine oxide are added to soften the fibres.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by the early processing stages and then the final stages. Sequencing expressions such as “Firstly,” “After that,” and “In the following stages” help the reader follow the process. However, “After that” is repeated, making some linking mechanical, and the middle-to-final transition is compressed into one sentence: “the soft mixture is spun to make yarn, weaving to make fabric products.” This also makes the relationship between spinning and weaving less clear. Use a wider range of accurate sequencing and reference devices, and give each major phase a clear progression so that the links between stages are consistently easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for describing a manufacturing process, and terms such as “cultivation,” “harvested,” “liquid pulp,” “filtered,” and “amine oxide” show some useful range. The main stages are generally expressed clearly. Some choices are imprecise or less natural, however: bamboo is “processed” rather than “transferred into fabric,” and “sharp cutting tool” is less specific than the diagram’s cutting stage. “Soft mixture” is also vague for the softened fibres, while “fabric products” does not clearly distinguish fabric from the clothing made from it. Aim for more precise process vocabulary and natural collocations, such as “converted into fabric,” “bamboo strips,” and “softened fibres.” These refinements would improve precision without requiring unnecessarily technical language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and more complex forms, including passive constructions such as “are grown,” “are cut,” and “are crushed,” which suit a process description. Meaning remains clear overall, but some grammatical errors occur. In the overview, “the final products which made from it” is missing the verb “are.” The sentence “water and amine oxide are added for softening and prepared it for next step” shifts awkwardly from passive to active and lacks an article before “next step.” The final-stage sentence also has a faulty parallel structure: “is spun to make yarn, weaving to make fabric products.” Use consistent passive forms throughout, for example, “the fibres are spun into yarn, which is then woven into fabric.” Careful checking of verb forms and sentence structure would improve accuracy.
