IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The diagram illustrates how bamboo is used for the production of fabric, from the initial stage to the final process. The process consists of 9 main stages, beginning with planting bamboo plants and ending with weaving which produces the final outcome.
Initially, the first step involves establishing bamboo plantation during spring season, after which it is harvested in autumn which is preferable season for this activity. Once this step has been completed the harvested plants are sliced into narrow strips. Following this, shredded strips are crushed to transform it into liquid pulp. The resulting pulp is is then filtered to separate long fibers from liquid.
Subsequently, the fibres undergo a softening process through the addition of elements like water and amino oxide. Thereafter, the fibres are spun into yarn. In the final stage, the yarn is woven is convert it into different kinds of fabric like clothes, socks, pillows etc.
To sum up, the process consists of sequences of stages, starting from the plantation of bamboo to harvesting and transforming it into materials which finally leads to the formation of essential fabrics.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the process from planting through to the production of fabric, and the overview identifies its start and general outcome. The sequence is mostly accurate, including the seasonal stages, cutting, crushing, filtering, softening, and spinning. However, the overview says the process ends with “weaving,” although the diagram includes a final stage showing finished clothing after the fabric is woven. Some details are also unclear or unsupported: “amino oxide” is given as “amino oxide” rather than the diagram’s “amine oxide,” and pillows are not shown. The final summary repeats the broad transformation rather than highlighting the complete sequence. To strengthen the response, report the clothing stage and keep examples strictly grounded in the diagram.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised into an introduction, a chronological account, and a concluding summary. Sequencing expressions such as “Initially,” “Following this,” “Subsequently,” and “Thereafter” help the reader follow the stages, and the description generally moves through the process in the correct order. The paragraphing is appropriate and the progression is clear. Some linking is slightly mechanical, however, and the final “To sum up” sentence largely repeats the introduction instead of adding a concise overview of the full process. The transition from the filtering stage to softening is understandable, but the account could make the progression more precise by grouping the mechanical and fibre-processing stages before describing yarn, fabric, and finished garments.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “sliced,” “crushed,” “filtered,” “fibres,” and “spun into yarn.” These choices communicate the main actions and show some flexibility beyond basic wording. There are, however, several imprecise or unnatural choices: “establishing bamboo plantation” is not a natural description of planting, “preferable season” adds an unsupported judgement, and “elements like” is less precise than naming the materials. “Amino oxide” also misreports the label “amine oxide,” while “essential fabrics” is vague. The examples “pillows etc.” are not supported by the diagram. Aim for precise process terms and avoid adding interpretations or products that are not shown.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including time clauses and participial sequencing, as in “after which it is harvested in autumn” and “Following this, shredded strips are crushed.” Most meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors and awkward constructions persist. For example, “the resulting pulp is is then filtered” repeats the verb, and “the yarn is woven is convert it” has an incorrect verb form and structure. The opening overview also says “ending with weaving,” which creates an inaccurate grammatical relationship between the process and its final stage. Articles and number are sometimes inconsistent, as in “during spring season” and “transform it into liquid pulp” after referring to plural strips. Proofread for repeated words, verb forms, and agreement, while retaining your varied sentence patterns.
