IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The provided diagram depicts the manufacturing process of fabric from the bamboo.
Overall, there are total nine stages involved in the process and its begins from platation of bamboo, whereas it ends on the weaving for making fabric from that.
Intially, the procedure is begun in the spring by planting bamboo plants, while these plants are harvested in the autumn season. Subsequently, bamboo is cut into strips and cushed to make liquid pulp. After that, long fibres are seperated from liquid by the filters and water and amine oxide are added to soften fibres. Thereafter, these are spinned to make yarn. Afterwards, the yarn is weaved to make fabric and it is used to make t-shirts and socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the process as having nine stages and include the seasonal planting and harvesting, the conversion of bamboo into pulp and fibres, and the final products. However, the overview is not fully accurate: it says the process ends with weaving, whereas the diagram shows a further stage in which fabric is made into clothing. Some details are also unclear, such as “filters” separating the fibres, and the response does not explain the final clothing stage as a distinct step. The response is 118 words, below the required 150, so the process is only partially reported and some features remain under-developed. To improve, give a fuller overview and describe all nine stages accurately, including the finished garments.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall sequence, moving from planting and harvesting through processing to the production of fabric and clothing. Paragraphing also separates the brief overview from the stage-by-stage account. Sequencing expressions such as “Subsequently,” “After that,” and “Thereafter” help the reader follow the process, although their repeated use makes the progression somewhat mechanical. The reference “these” in “Thereafter, these are spinned” is not fully clear, as it could refer to fibres rather than the yarn-making process. The overview also conflicts with the final sentence by saying the process ends at weaving. A more precise overview and clearer links between each stage would make the organisation more cohesive.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” and “yarn,” which allows the main stages to be understood. There is also some variation in sequencing language. However, spelling errors such as “Intially,” “cushed,” and “seperated” are noticeable, and several word choices or forms are inaccurate: “platation” is not the correct noun, “filters” is awkward for the filtering stage, and “spinned” and “weaved” are non-standard forms in this context. “Fabric from the bamboo” and “ends on the weaving” are also unnatural collocations. Use accurate process terms and check spelling and verb forms to make the description more precise and natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including a contrast in the overview (“whereas”) and a time clause beginning “while.” Most stages are expressed in a comprehensible sequence, and the reader can generally follow the process. However, some grammatical errors remain, including “there are total nine stages,” “its begins,” and “it ends on the weaving.” The passive construction “the procedure is begun” is awkward, and “these are spinned” has an incorrect verb form. There are also problems with articles and agreement in “the filters” and “water and amine oxide are added.” Aim for consistently accurate passive forms, which suit a process description, and check subject–verb agreement and articles.
