IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The picture illustrates the process of obtaining fabric from bamboo plant.

Overall, the entire procedure is categorized into nine steps. The first is the plantation of bamboo plants in spring, and the last is to make different types of clothes from the acquired fabric.

In first place, plants usually grow in spring season. They are harvested in autumn, till then, they have acheived their full maturity. After that, they are cut into strips using an electric cutter. Then these strips are crushed in order to get liquid pulp from them. The acquired pulp then undergoes filteration process which sperates the long fibres form it. After this step, water and amine oxide are mixed with fibre to soften it. Once they become soft, they are spun to make yarn from them. The second last step involes weaving the achieved fabric, and at last, the fabric is delievered to fsctories make shirts and socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the full process and give a clear overview, identifying the nine stages and the seasonal start and clothing at the end. The sequence from harvesting through cutting, crushing, filtering, softening, spinning and weaving is accurately reported, and you include the key materials used to soften the fibres. This meets the task well. Some details are less fully or precisely described: the diagram shows bamboo being planted in spring, rather than saying plants “usually grow” then, and the final stage shows finished clothing items rather than stating that fabric is “delivered to factories.” That destination is not shown. To strengthen the response further, describe the stages strictly from the diagram and make the overview capture the transformation from raw bamboo to finished garments.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by the stages in their correct order. Sequencing expressions such as “After that,” “Then,” “After this step,” and “at last” help the reader follow the process, and the progression from raw material to fabric is easy to understand. The organisation is effective, though the repeated use of simple time markers makes cohesion somewhat mechanical. The overview also says the last step is making clothes, while the final sentence adds an unsupported factory-delivery detail, which slightly weakens the clarity of the endpoint. Grouping the stages into clearer phases—cultivation and preparation, fibre processing, and textile production—would create more flexible progression and reduce reliance on repeated “then” transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “long fibres,” “soften,” “spun,” and “weaving.” These terms make the stages understandable, and some less common choices show an attempt to describe the process precisely. However, several word choices or forms are inaccurate or awkward, such as “plantation” for the act of planting, “filteration,” and “the acquired fabric” where the material at that point is yarn. There are also spelling errors, including “acheived,” “sperates,” “involes,” and “delievered,” though the meaning generally remains clear. Aim for accurate process collocations and proofread spelling; for example, use “is filtered” and “is woven into fabric.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including the overview sentence and the conditional time clause “Once they become soft, they are spun…”. Most stages are expressed in a clear passive form, which suits a process description. Some grammatical errors remain, however. “In first place” is missing an article, and “the fabric is delievered to fsctories make shirts and socks” lacks a grammatical link before “make” and has an unclear construction. “Plants usually grow in spring season” also needs an article or a more natural seasonal phrase. These issues do not prevent the reader from following the process, but they limit accuracy. Use consistent passive constructions, such as “the fabric is then used to make shirts and socks,” and check articles and clause structure.
