IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the step by step process of how bamboo fabric is manufactured.

Overall, the diagram consists of 9 step process starting from planting and harvesting the bamboo plants. After that, machine is utilised to cut the plant into strips, it is then crushed, filtered and softened the fibres. At the end of the three steps, fibre is spinned and then clothes are weaven to make different type of clothes.

The first step of the process commences with the bamboo plants planted in the spring season. The same plants are then harvested by the farmers in the autumn season after nearly 6 or 7 months. Each bamboo stick is then cutted into strips by using sharp rolling machine, the strips are then crushed to make the liquid pulp.

Post-crushing, liquid is then filtered by seperating the long fibres from the liquid. To make the fibres softened, water and amine oxide are added. In the seventh step of the process the wire is spin to make the yam which is then weaven in a specific way to make fabric. The fabric is particularly utilised by the tailors or machines to make different kind of clothes.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the process from planting through to the finished clothing, and the overview identifies the main sequence and the transformation from bamboo to fabric. Several details are accurately reported, including the seasons, crushing the strips into pulp, filtering the fibres, and adding water and amine oxide. This gives the response a clear account of the key stages. However, some details are imprecise or unsupported: the diagram does not specify that harvesting occurs after six or seven months, that a rolling machine is used, or that tailors make the clothes. The final stages also need clearer reporting: yarn is spun, woven into fabric, and then shown as clothing. More precise coverage of these stages would make the summary more complete and developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is arranged in a sensible order, with an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing the stages. Sequencing expressions such as “The first step,” “Post-crushing,” and “In the seventh step” help the reader follow the process. The overall progression is clear, although some links are mechanical or unclear. For example, “At the end of the three steps” does not clearly identify which stages are meant, and “it is then crushed, filtered and softened the fibres” compresses several actions in a way that obscures their relationships. The reference to “the same plants” is also slightly vague. Use more precise transitions and ensure each sentence clearly connects one stage to the next.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a relevant range of process vocabulary, including “manufactured,” “harvested,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” and “fibres,” which helps communicate the stages. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “amine oxide” and “separating.” However, several word choices, collocations, and spellings are inaccurate: “spinned,” “weaven,” “cutted,” “yam,” and “rolling machine” do not accurately express the intended terms. “Different type of clothes” is also imprecise and repetitive. These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the general process, but greater control of technical vocabulary and common collocations is needed. Check spellings and use the diagram’s terms, especially “spin,” “yarn,” and “weave.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including passive forms such as “are added” and “is then filtered,” as well as sequencing clauses. The meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “the diagram consists of 9 step process” needs an article and plural form, while “it is then crushed, filtered and softened the fibres” mixes incompatible structures. In “the wire is spin,” the passive verb form is incorrect, and “the fibres softened” also needs a correctly formed clause. Articles and agreement are inconsistent in phrases such as “machine is utilised” and “different type of clothes.” Review passive constructions and singular/plural agreement, and proofread sentence boundaries and punctuation.
