IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The picture demonstrates how bamboo fabric is made.

Overall, the diagram illustrates that fabric was manufactured through various steps. Plant bamboo was firstly harvested by a man in Autumn and then he cut the bamboo in the thin strips by using a machine. Then he soften the fibres and filter it. Addition to, he crushed the strips and spin it. Hence, cloth has manufactured.

To commence with, plants bamboo are known as Spring. In Autumn, a man harvested the bamboo and then further cut it into strips by using a roller machine. Furthermore, water and amine oxide is added to soften the fibres and then it is filtered to seperate long fibres from liquid.

Moreover, the liquid pulp is made by using crushed strips. Once the liquid is dried, then it is spined to make a yarn ball. After making the yarn, then it is weaved to make a fabric. In results, we can make anything like socks or shirts from the fabric.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the process as bamboo fabric production and include several key stages, including planting in spring, harvesting in autumn, processing the fibres, spinning yarn and weaving fabric. However, the account does not consistently report the diagram’s sequence: the overview says the fibres are softened and filtered before the strips are crushed, whereas crushing comes first, followed by filtering and then softening. The overview also omits the final stage, where fabric is made into clothing. Some details are inaccurate or unsupported: the diagram does not specify a roller machine, and it does not show the liquid being dried. To strengthen the response, give a clear overview of the full progression from growing bamboo to finished clothing, then describe the stages in their correct order.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs describing stages. Sequencing expressions such as “To commence with,” “Furthermore” and “Moreover” help signal progression. However, the order is difficult to follow because the overview places softening and filtering before crushing, while the later account gives a different sequence. Some links are also mechanical or unclear, particularly “Addition to” and “In results,” and “Hence, cloth has manufactured” does not clearly connect the preceding stages to the outcome. Organise the process in the diagram’s order and use a small number of accurate transitions, such as “After crushing” and “Once the fibres have been softened,” to make the progression easier to track.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “strips,” “fibres,” “liquid pulp,” “yarn” and “weaved,” so the reader can generally understand the topic. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “plants bamboo are known as Spring” does not express planting, “cut it into strips by using a roller machine” adds an unsupported detail, and “a yarn ball” is less precise than describing yarn being produced. There are also spelling and word-form slips, such as “seperate” and “spined.” Aim for precise process verbs and natural combinations, and check spelling carefully. This would make the vocabulary more reliable and reduce moments where the reader has to infer your meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, for example, “Furthermore, water and amine oxide is added to soften the fibres and then it is filtered.” However, errors in sentence structure, tense and agreement occur often enough to make some relationships unclear. Examples include “Plant bamboo was firstly harvested,” “he soften the fibres,” and “cloth has manufactured”; these need more accurate verb forms and passive constructions. Agreement is also inconsistent in “water and amine oxide is added,” while “plants bamboo are known as Spring” has an unclear grammatical structure. Practise describing processes with consistent present simple passive forms, such as “The bamboo is harvested” and “The fibres are filtered,” and check subject–verb agreement and articles in each sentence.
