IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The graph illustrates the process of making fabrics from plants specially bambo in nine parts.

Overall, the process is linear. It started from planting bambo to harvesting and convert it into soft fibres and yarn and turn that into textile products.

Bambo planted in Spring and harvested in Autumn. After harvesting plants were cut into stripes by use a cutting machine. By adding water and amine oxide those parts turned into soften fibers. Now in filtering process long fibers separates from liquid and crused strips to make pulps.

Now the most important part is making Yarn. For making yarn, those liquid pulp needs to spin. After making yarn by waving those yarn will turn into a fabric. In textile and factories, workers prepares different types of clothes such as shirts, pants, socks etc by using those fabrics.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the process as having nine stages and give a relevant overview, noting that it begins with planting and ends with fabric products. You also include the seasonal timing and several key operations. However, the sequence is not reported accurately: crushing produces liquid pulp before filtering separates the long fibres from the liquid, and only then are the fibres softened with water and amine oxide. Your account reverses these stages and says the pulp is spun, rather than the fibres being spun into yarn. The final clothing examples are partly supported by the diagram, but pants are not shown. The response is also 13 words below the required minimum. Include the full sequence and a little more precise detail to cover the task more completely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing stages. This gives the reader a basic route through the process, and phrases such as “After harvesting” and “After making yarn” help signal sequence. However, the progression becomes confusing when the filtering and softening stages are presented in the wrong order, and “Now the most important part” creates an unnecessary shift in focus. References such as “those parts,” “those liquid pulp,” and “those yarn” are not always clear or well connected to the preceding information. Organise the body strictly in diagram order, using clear stage links such as “Next,” “Following this,” and “Finally,” and avoid repeating vague demonstratives.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “fibres,” “filtering,” “pulp,” “spin,” and “fabric,” so the topic is generally understandable. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable and sometimes make the description less precise: “bambo” appears repeatedly, “stripes” is used for bamboo strips, and “waving” is used instead of weaving. Some phrases are also awkward or imprecise, such as “making fabrics from plants” and “those liquid pulp.” Use the diagram’s exact terms where possible, and check spelling carefully. A more accurate range of process verbs—such as crush, filter, soften, spin, weave, and produce—would help you describe each stage clearly without relying on general wording.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more developed sentences, including the overview sentence beginning “It started from planting…” and the conditional-style phrase “After harvesting…”. However, grammatical errors are frequent, and several sentences are incomplete or difficult to follow. For example, “Bambo planted in Spring and harvested in Autumn” lacks an auxiliary verb, while “After harvesting plants were cut…” needs clearer sentence structure and punctuation. Agreement and verb forms are also problematic in “long fibers separates” and “workers prepares.” The phrase “By adding water and amine oxide those parts turned…” has an unclear grammatical relationship between the opening phrase and the main clause. Practise complete passive constructions for process descriptions, such as “The bamboo is planted” and “The fibres are softened,” and check subject–verb agreement.
