IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the production of fabric from bamboo plants. Overall, the process consists of nine linear stages, commencing with planting bamboo during spring season and ending with weaving to make fabric used in textile industries to make cloths.

Firstly, bamboo is planted during spring season, then it is harvested manually using machetes during autumn. After this, bamboo canes are then cut into strips using shreders then the strips are crushed to produce liquid pulp.

The liquid pulp is then filtered, this separates long fiber from liquid. Subsequently, water and amine oxide is added to soften the fibers. Next, the soft fibres are spinned to make spherical yam, which are then weaved to make fabric. Finally, the weaved fabric are used as raw material to manufacture cloths such as socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the main sequence from planting through processing to fabric, and the overview identifies the nine stages and the seasonal start. Most details match the diagram, including harvesting in autumn, filtering the pulp and adding water and amine oxide to soften the fibres. However, the overview says the process ends with weaving, whereas the diagram includes a final stage showing finished clothing; the response later mentions clothing but does not clearly identify this as the last step. The claim that fabric is used in “textile industries” is not shown. The response is also 20 words below the required minimum, leaving some stages and the final outcome underdeveloped. Include the clothing stage in the overview and add precise detail to reach the required length.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is arranged in a clear sequence, with an overview followed by stages in the order shown. Linking expressions such as “Firstly,” “After this,” “Subsequently,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the process, and the paragraph break separates the initial stages from later processing. This coherent overall organisation is effective. Some connections are mechanical, however, and the sentence “The liquid pulp is then filtered, this separates long fiber from liquid” joins two independent clauses with only a comma. The overview also says the process ends with weaving, then the final paragraph adds clothing, which weakens the progression slightly. Use a full stop or “which” in the filtering sentence, and make the overview’s endpoint consistent with the final stage.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “filtered,” “soften,” “raw material,” and “manufacture,” so the stages are generally easy to understand. Some less common terms are attempted, but several word choices or spellings are inaccurate: “shreders” does not match the diagram’s cutting step, “yam” appears to mean yarn, and “spinned” and “weaved” are not the appropriate forms here. “Cloths” is also less suitable than “clothing” for the finished items shown. These slips do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision. Choose terms that describe the pictured actions accurately, and check spelling and word forms, especially for technical process vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including passive constructions such as “bamboo is planted” and “water and amine oxide is added,” which suit a process description. The sequence is generally understandable, and some sentences are controlled. There are, however, some errors in agreement, articles and sentence boundaries. For example, “water and amine oxide is added” needs a plural verb, while “the weaved fabric are used” also has a subject–verb agreement problem. “During spring season” needs an article or a more natural construction. The sentence beginning “The liquid pulp is then filtered” contains a comma splice. Review agreement and article use, and separate or correctly join clauses to improve accuracy while retaining your range of sentence forms.
