IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illutrates tha manufacturing process of frabric from bamboo. The figures shows the process takes 9 step for coverting a bamboo plant into a clothing. The process starts in spring when the bamboo plants are fully grown. They are harvested and then cut into small strips. This process is done to make the crushing easier in the next step. The strips are crushed and are tranformed into liquid pulp. The filter separate the the long fibres of the plant from mixture of liquid. To make the fibres soft ,water and amino oxided is added. Now the fibres are softened, they are spun around to make a yam. This yam contains soft threads which are weaven together to form a fabric. Freshly developed fabric is then transformed into dfferent types of clothing such as socks or t shirt. Overall the process is simple and doable and only takes few steps for converting a freshly cut plant into a fine piece of clolthing.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the main stages from planting and harvesting through processing the fibres, making yarn and weaving fabric, and you include the final clothing products shown. The sequence is generally accurate, including the spring planting and the use of water and amine oxide to soften fibres. However, the overview is not fully effective: calling the process “simple and doable” is an unsupported judgement rather than a summary of its main features. Also, the response says planting occurs when the bamboo is “fully grown,” which is not stated in the diagram, and it does not mention that harvesting takes place in autumn. A more precise overview would identify the nine-stage, linear process and its progression from cultivation to finished garments.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The stages are presented in a mostly logical order, and sequencing expressions such as “then,” “in the next step,” and “Now” help the reader follow the process. The response also moves from the initial cultivation stages to fibre processing and then to the finished products. However, it is written as one continuous paragraph, so the overview and the detailed sequence are not clearly separated. Some links are mechanical, and “This process” is not entirely clear about whether it refers to cutting or crushing. Organising the response into a brief overview followed by a clearly grouped account of the stages, with more precise references, would make the progression easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” “spun,” and “woven,” which allows you to describe most stages. There are also attempts at more specific terms, such as “transformed.” However, spelling errors are noticeable, including “illutrates,” “frabric,” “tranformed,” “weaven,” and “clolthing,” and some word choices or collocations are inaccurate: “yam” is used instead of “yarn,” and “amino oxided” does not correctly name amine oxide. “Fine piece of clothing” is also imprecise for this process. Check technical terms carefully and choose standard process language to improve accuracy and clarity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response includes both simple sentences and some attempts to connect stages, for example, “The strips are crushed and are tranformed into liquid pulp.” Most of the process remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. In “The figures shows the process takes 9 step,” the subject–verb agreement and the sentence structure are faulty; “The filter separate the the long fibres” also has agreement and article problems. Other examples include “water and amino oxided is added” and “only takes few steps,” where agreement and article use need attention. There is some control of passive forms, such as “They are harvested,” but using them consistently and checking singular/plural agreement would improve accuracy.
