IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram shows the process of manufacturing fabric from planting bamboo pants.
The process starts with planting bamboo plants in spring and harvesting them in autmn. The bamboos are cut into strips using mechanical cutter. The strips are crushed to make liquid pulp. Then the liquid pulp is filtered to separate long fibres from the liquid pulp. After separation, the fibres need to be softened and to do so water and amine oxide are added to the liquid. Then using spin, yarn is made from the fibres.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You identify the general subject and report several early and middle stages, including planting in spring, harvesting in autumn, crushing, filtering, softening and spinning. However, the response covers the process only partially: it omits the final weaving and production of clothing, and gives no clear overview of the full sequence or its endpoint. The description of softening is also inaccurate: water and amine oxide are added to the fibres, not to the liquid after separation. The response is substantially below the required 150 words, which limits the detail and coverage you can provide. To improve, summarise the complete process from planting through to finished garments and include a concise overview of its main phases.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The stages you include are mostly presented in a sensible chronological order, and linking phrases such as “The process starts with” and “Then” help the reader follow the sequence. The response also uses a cause-and-purpose link in “to do so,” connecting the softening stage with the added materials. However, the account ends abruptly at yarn production, so the progression does not reach the diagram’s final stages. Several sentences repeat “the liquid pulp” or “fibres,” and the response has no paragraphing or overview to organise the information into a clear introduction and process description. Group the stages into a complete sequence and use varied, precise references to maintain flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “strips,” “crushed,” “filtered,” “fibres,” and “yarn,” which makes the basic stages understandable. However, the range is limited and some choices are inaccurate or awkward: “planting bamboo pants” appears to be a mistaken word choice, “mechanical cutter” is less precise than describing the cutting equipment, and “using spin” is not a natural expression for making yarn. There are also spelling errors in “autmn” and “bamboos.” Use accurate process terms and collocations, such as “bamboo plants,” “a cutting machine,” and “the fibres are spun into yarn,” and include vocabulary for the omitted weaving and clothing stages.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
Most sentences communicate a basic sequence, and you attempt some variation through phrases such as “The process starts with…” and “After separation…”. However, the range is narrow, with most information expressed in short, simple sentences. Some grammatical patterns are awkward or incomplete: “Then using spin, yarn is made” lacks a natural construction, while “the fibres need to be softened and to do so…” does not coordinate its clauses smoothly. The opening phrase “from planting bamboo pants” also makes the intended meaning unclear. Practise passive forms suited to process descriptions, for example, “The strips are crushed” and “The fibres are spun into yarn,” and connect stages with accurate subordinate clauses.
