IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The flowchart illustrates the production of fabric from bamboo plant. Overall, the process involves 9 major steps.Initiated from the bamboo plant harvesting to soft fibres and ends with making of clothes.

The process of making fabric is started from the bamboo plants grew in spring season and then they are harvested in autumn. The bamboos are then cutted into strips, where these crush strips are used to make the liquid pulp. After making the viscous liquid, it then goes to next step of filtration where it separates long fibres from the liquid.

After having long fibres through filtration the next step is to soften the fibres by adding water and amine oxide. The spin is produced that is used to make yarn. The yarn is then used to weave and make a fabric. When fabric is produced, the next is to use it for making different types of clothes and dresses.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the main stages from planting and autumn harvesting through processing, weaving, and making clothes, and the overview identifies the process as a sequence ending in clothing. Most details match the diagram, including the seasonal timing and the addition of water and amine oxide. This is a relevant, generally clear account, though some stages are less fully or precisely reported: for example, “The spin is produced” does not clearly explain that fibres are spun to make yarn, and the final clothing stage could be stated more directly as the production of finished garments. The overview also says the process begins with “harvesting,” although planting is the first step. A more precise overview and clearer explanation of each transformation would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is arranged in a sensible sequence, with an opening overview followed by the early processing stages and then the later stages. Linking expressions such as “then,” “After,” and “When” help the reader follow the process. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear: “After making the viscous liquid, it then goes to next step” has an uncertain reference, and “The spin is produced that is used to make yarn” disrupts the progression between softening and yarn production. The overview is also joined to the preceding sentence without a space after the full stop. To move further, use clearer references to the material at each stage and vary transitions while maintaining the chronological flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “filtration,” “fibres,” and “weave.” These terms make the stages recognisable, and the technical phrase “amine oxide” is accurately included. Some word choices and collocations are imprecise, however: “soft fibres” is less exact than “softened fibres,” “The spin is produced” is not a natural way to describe making yarn, and “different types of clothes and dresses” is repetitive. “Viscous liquid” is also an unnecessary interpretation rather than a label from the diagram. Aim for precise process verbs and natural collocations, such as “the fibres are spun into yarn” and “finished garments.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

There is a mix of simple and more complex forms, including passive constructions such as “they are harvested” and “is used to make,” which suit a process description. Some grammatical errors remain, though the main sequence is generally understandable. Examples include “bamboo plant” where a plural or article is needed, “the process … is started from,” and “the bamboo plants grew in spring,” which uses an incorrect verb form for the process description. “The bamboos are then cutted” also has an incorrect past participle, while “the next is to use it” is an incomplete construction. Check articles, plural forms, passive verb forms, and sentence boundaries; these corrections would make the description more consistently controlled.
