IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
This process diagram illustrates how fabric is producted or how bamboo take place.
Overall,it is evident that thr process consists of 7 steps main stages, beginning with cuuting of bamboo plant and culminating in yam.The process follows a linear sequence, with each stage contributing to the completion of the overall process.
In detail, the process begins with spring during which the cutting of bamboo plant is done.Following this,Harvesting take place whereby, autumn is harvest.Subsequently,it cut into strips.
In the next stage, pulp occurs, involving the crush strips which are used to make the liquid pulp. This is followed by Filteration during which the filter separate long fibers from liquid,In the penultimate stage, soften fibres is made which is done by adding water and amine oxide. After that it is spin to make yam and then the weaves are used to make fabric and at the end clothing is done.
This diagram show the procedure that how clothing from bamboo is done, showing how the initial materials are transformed into the final product.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the process as a sequence and mention several relevant stages, including planting, harvesting, crushing, filtering, softening, spinning and weaving. However, the account only partially reports the diagram: the overview says there are seven stages and that it ends in yarn, whereas the diagram has nine steps and finishes with clothing. The opening also incorrectly suggests the process begins with cutting; it starts with planting in spring, followed by harvesting in autumn. Step 9 is not clearly described, and the seasonal details are confused in “autumn is harvest.” To improve, give an accurate overview of the full sequence and report the final clothing stage, while distinguishing the preparation of fibres from the later yarn and fabric stages.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction and overview are followed by a description of the stages, with sequencing expressions such as “Following this,” “Subsequently,” and “After that.” This gives the reader a general sense of progression. However, the overview and final sentence repeat the same broad idea, and the stages are compressed into long passages, making some transitions unclear. For example, “In the next stage, pulp occurs” does not clearly connect crushing to filtering, while the diagram’s changing direction across rows is not reflected in the explanation. Use separate, clearly focused paragraphs and connect each stage explicitly, so the sequence is easy to follow without relying on a string of transition words.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” “amine oxide,” and “weaves.” These terms show an attempt to describe the diagram rather than relying entirely on general language. However, several word choices, forms and spellings are inaccurate or unclear, such as “producted,” “yam” for yarn, “Filteration,” and “clothing is done.” Phrases such as “how bamboo take place” and “pulp occurs” do not express the intended meaning naturally. Aim for precise process verbs and standard technical terms, and check spelling carefully; this will make the stages clearer and reduce the effort required from the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple sentences and longer structures, including “Overall, it is evident that…” and a clause beginning “during which.” However, the range is limited, and complex attempts are often faulty. Examples include “how bamboo take place,” “Harvesting take place,” and “the filter separate,” where subject–verb agreement is incorrect. Tense and sentence construction are also inconsistent in “it cut into strips” and “After that it is spin.” Punctuation and spacing are unreliable, particularly around commas and sentence boundaries, which sometimes makes the sequence difficult to parse. Practise forming accurate passive sentences for process descriptions, such as “The strips are crushed,” and check agreement and punctuation in each sentence.
