IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagram illustrates different steps involved in manufacturing of fabric from bamboo.

Overall, there are 9 (Planting, Harvestation, Turning into Strips, Pulping, Filtering, Softening fibres, Yarning, Weaving and turning into well designed clothes) stages in making of fabric from bamboo.

First of all, bamboo plants are planted in spring to grow properly until the autumn season. As soon as autumn comes, those bamboo trees are harvested through men force by cutting them down. Futhermore, harvested plants are passed onto the machine where they are processed into crushed strips for the purpose of making liquid pulp. After pulping, filtration is carried out to separate the long fibres from liquid. Separated fibres are softened by adding water and amine oxide, so that the yarning can be done. Hence, the seventh stage involves the spinning of soften fibres and they are made into yarn.

Lastly, after completing of yarn stage, weaving helps to make fabric and then the fabric is turned into different pieces of clothing such as shirts or socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response gives a clear account of the process from planting through to finished clothing, and its overview identifies the nine main stages. Most details match the diagram, including planting in spring, harvesting in autumn, separating long fibres from liquid, and adding water and amine oxide before spinning. The final reference to shirts and socks is also supported by the illustration. The main imprecision is the description of the crushing stage: the diagram shows strips being crushed to make liquid pulp, whereas “processed into crushed strips” makes it sound as though the strips themselves are the product. The overview’s phrase “well designed clothes” adds a quality not shown. Keep the sequence and coverage, but describe each transformation more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised into an introduction, an overview, and two chronological body sections, so the reader can follow the process from cultivation to clothing. Sequencing expressions such as “First of all,” “As soon as autumn comes,” “After pulping,” and “Lastly” help signal progression, and the stages are generally presented in the correct order. Some linking is slightly mechanical, however, and “Hence” does not express a clear cause-and-effect relationship between softening and spinning. The overview also lists the stages in parentheses rather than summarising the process more naturally. To strengthen the flow, use a few precise transitions and connect related stages without repeatedly announcing each step.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

There is adequate vocabulary to describe the process, including “harvested,” “liquid pulp,” “filtration,” “fibres,” and “weaving.” The writer also attempts process-specific terms, but some choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “Harvestation” and “Yarning” are not suitable stage names, while “men force” and “well designed clothes” do not convey the intended meaning naturally. “Turning into strips” is understandable but less precise than describing the bamboo as being cut into strips. The spelling error “Futhermore” also detracts from control. Aim for accurate, conventional process vocabulary and natural collocations; this will make the description more precise without requiring more elaborate wording.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex structures, including time clauses (“As soon as autumn comes”) and a purpose clause (“so that the yarning can be done”). Most sentences communicate the sequence clearly, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “in manufacturing of fabric” needs an article or a different construction, and “after completing of yarn stage” is not a well-formed phrase. In “the spinning of soften fibres,” the participle form is needed, and “they are made into yarn” has an unclear reference. The passive voice is appropriate for a process description, but it is not consistently controlled. Review articles, verb forms, and sentence references, while retaining the varied sentence patterns already attempted.
