IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

This is a brief diagramic explaination of how a bamboo fabric is made and used which includes it's grown, its extraction, its process and its use. This also includes additional steps for its processing. It is divided into natural part and another of machinery section.

Firstly, In the natural part it shows that a bamboo is planted in Spring season as it is most favourable season for its growth, then as it grows till Autumn for harvest. Later it is cutted down into strips for easy process. Which is further crushed to remove extra pulp and other remaining liquids, which is then filtered to eperate out long dried fibers and liquids.

Later, it is then sent to the industry or send for machnery process. Which includes adding water and amine oxide to softern up the hard dry fibers. Which is later spined and weawned to make yam.And lastely this yam is them weave to make fabric for clothes or sold as a yam ball.

This is the whole cycle from how a bamboo is cultivated and processed to make a fabric and later used for general usage of cloth, yam ball, etc.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, from cultivation to the final product. However, the description is somewhat informal and lacks a clear overview or summary of the process as a whole. While the key stages are identified, the report lacks a professional tone and fails to make meaningful comparisons or highlight the most significant features of the diagram. The inclusion of personal commentary like 'This is a brief diagramic explaination' is unnecessary for an Academic Task 1 response. To improve, focus on presenting the information objectively and structuring the response to clearly highlight the transition from raw material to finished product.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the sequence of events. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'Later', 'Which is', 'This is'). Some sentences are fragmented, such as 'Which is further crushed to remove extra pulp...', which disrupts the flow of information. The transition between the 'natural' and 'machinery' sections is clear, but the overall progression could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that sentences are complete and logically connected would significantly enhance the coherence of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and sophistication expected at higher bands. There are several spelling errors (e.g., 'explaination', 'epereate', 'machnery', 'spined', 'weawned', 'yam') and word choice issues (e.g., 'cutted' instead of 'cut', 'yam' instead of 'yarn'). While the student successfully uses some process-related terms like 'cultivated', 'filtered', and 'fibers', the overall range is limited. To achieve a higher score, the student should focus on accurate spelling and using more precise terminology related to industrial processes, such as 'extrusion' or 'spinning'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response relies heavily on simple sentence structures and contains frequent grammatical errors. There are issues with subject-verb agreement and verb forms, such as 'it's grown' (should be 'its growth') and 'cutted' (should be 'cut'). Many sentences are incomplete or incorrectly punctuated, such as starting sentences with 'Which is'. While the meaning is generally clear, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar and punctuation limits the score. To improve, the student should practice forming complex sentences correctly and pay closer attention to verb tenses and sentence boundaries.
