IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The process chart clearly illustrates how fabric is made from bamboo.

Overall, it it evident that starting of planting to ending of produce clothes requires nine approaches, respectively.

Initially, the progress starts planting bamboo plants in the spring and harvest it in the Autumn by farmers. The next way support it in order to derive it to final is cut into strips through factory method. Afterwards, cut strips have to be crushed strips to make liquid pulp.

Secondly, the fifth approach to produce bamboo fabric is filter the strips usually separating long fibres from liquid. Once filtering strips, it is available to add water and amine oxide in order to become it soften fibres. As a result, it is required to spin the previous ingredients to make yarn. After that, you need to weave it in order to make fabric which is affected the next way significantly. Finally, the product is ready to arrive the hand of customers by fabric clothes.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, from planting to the final product. However, the overview is somewhat weak and lacks a clear summary of the key features. While the steps are identified, the description of the process is occasionally repetitive and lacks the precision required for a higher band. For example, the phrase 'nine approaches' is inaccurate as the process is a continuous flow rather than distinct 'approaches'. The description of the chemical and mechanical stages could be more detailed to better reflect the information provided in the diagram. To improve, focus on grouping the stages logically and providing a more concise, accurate overview of the entire transformation process.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response uses some cohesive devices such as 'Initially', 'Afterwards', and 'Finally' to sequence the steps. However, the paragraphing is ineffective; the text is split into two paragraphs, but the second paragraph is quite long and lacks clear internal structure. The transition between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the logical flow is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing, such as 'The next way support it in order to derive it to final'. The use of referencing is also inconsistent, making it difficult for the reader to follow the progression of the process smoothly. Improving the use of linking words and creating more distinct, logical paragraphs would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety expected at higher levels. There are several instances of awkward word choices and non-standard collocations, such as 'derive it to final', 'crushed strips to make liquid pulp', and 'arrive the hand of customers'. The student relies on basic verbs and nouns, which limits the ability to describe the technical nature of the process effectively. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on using more precise terminology related to manufacturing processes, such as 'extraction', 'dissolution', or 'spinning', and ensure that word combinations are natural and accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Issues include incorrect verb forms ('starting of planting', 'filter the strips'), missing articles, and awkward sentence construction ('it is available to add water... in order to become it soften fibres'). Subject-verb agreement and preposition usage are also inconsistent. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on sentence construction, correct verb tenses, and proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy would be highly beneficial.
