IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates, how the babboo plants will the manufactures converte into premium fabric cloths. Most of the process will be takes place in the growing stage of the bamboo plants.
Overall, the quality of the fabric will be choosen from good plants. The bamboo plants were cut down in the final stage and transfered, where the plants had crush into pulp will be convert into yarn using different type of machines.
At the beginning stage, the bamboo plants will be grown in spring season and the plants were harvest by machines in autumn season. The long bamboo sticks were cut into small strips, then the strips was crushed in griender to make liquid pulp. The extracted pulp had seperated into long fibres from liquid.
The seperated liquid was filtered using funnel in a slow process, whereas in the soften fibres we have add some water and amine oxide to convert yarn spin. Finally, the spin was waved to make fabric, however the faric transformed in

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, from growing to the final fabric production. However, the summary is incomplete as the final sentence is cut off, leaving the process description unfinished. While the main features are identified, the overview is somewhat weak and lacks a clear synthesis of the transformation process. The description of the stages is generally accurate, but the lack of a complete conclusion and some minor inaccuracies in the description of the chemical process (e.g., 'amine oxide to convert yarn spin') limit the depth of the response. To improve, ensure all stages are fully described and the overview highlights the key transformation steps more clearly.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of the process. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate, such as the repetitive use of 'the plants' and 'the bamboo'. Some transitions, like 'whereas in the soften fibres we have add', are awkward and hinder the flow of information. The referencing is sometimes unclear, and the abrupt ending of the text significantly impacts the overall coherence. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each sentence logically connects to the previous one without relying on repetitive phrasing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but there are frequent errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'babboo', 'converte', 'griender', 'seperated', and 'faric'. The student attempts to use process-specific terminology like 'pulp', 'yarn', and 'amine oxide', which is positive, but the incorrect application of these terms (e.g., 'convert yarn spin') suggests a lack of precision. There is also a reliance on basic verbs, which limits the sophistication of the response. To improve, focus on accurate spelling and learning the correct collocations for industrial processes, such as 'the pulp is processed' rather than 'the plants had crush into pulp'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Issues include incorrect verb tenses ('will be takes place', 'plants had crush'), subject-verb agreement errors ('the strips was crushed'), and awkward phrasing ('the spin was waved to make fabric'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors requires the reader to work harder to interpret the intended message. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, specifically ensuring consistent verb tenses and correct subject-verb agreement.
