IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The given process diagram gives you the information about the manufacturing method of fabric from bamboo.
The overview of the diagram depicts a picture of the 9-step method that involves growing bamboo, autumn aspect, cutting into strip pieces, crushing
strips, filtration process, softening of fibres, spinning, weaving and finally production of fabric materials.
The first and most important step of the making of the fabric includes the planting of bamboo during the spring. The following step requires the harvesting of the bamboo plants during autumn. Furthermore, the bamboo sticks obtained by the harvesting process need to be cut into small pieces, such as strips of bamboo. Then, to make liquid pulp, it is mandatory for these strips to be crushed. The next and necessary method is to filter this obtained liquid pulp.
As discussed earlier, the filtration process needs to separate long fibres from liquids. This helps us to purify the fibres and remove the unwanted liquid particles. After that, water is added to the long fibres, along with a chemical called amine oxide. This provides us with the required material only, that is, the softened fibre. Later on, these softened fibres are spun to obtain yarn. The weaving process is carried out to convert the yarn into a fabric, which in the last process is used to produce the final products, such as clothes, shoes, ties, etc. So, in this way, this complete process is carried out to obtain fabric products in the textile industry.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response successfully identifies the main stages of the bamboo fabric manufacturing process. You have clearly outlined the sequence from planting to the final production of goods. The overview is functional, though it could be improved by highlighting the transformation from raw material to chemical processing more explicitly. You have covered all parts of the diagram well, and the information is accurate. To reach a higher band, ensure that the 'main features' are synthesised more effectively in the overview rather than just listing the steps. The inclusion of specific examples like clothes and shoes demonstrates a good understanding of the final stage of the process.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The response is logically organised, with a clear progression from the initial agricultural stage to the industrial manufacturing stage. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the introduction, the initial steps, and the final processing stages. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'The following step', 'Furthermore', 'Then', and 'As discussed earlier' to link ideas. While some transitions are slightly mechanical, the overall flow is smooth and easy to follow. The referencing is clear, and the information is presented in a way that allows the reader to track the process without confusion.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the process accurately, using terms like 'manufacturing method', 'harvesting', 'liquid pulp', and 'textile industry'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'autumn aspect' which is slightly unnatural in this context, and 'required material only' which is a bit vague. However, you successfully use technical terms related to the process, such as 'filtration', 'softening', and 'spinning'. The vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication of the technical steps involved in the diagram.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use passive voice appropriately, which is essential for process descriptions (e.g., 'strips need to be crushed', 'water is added'). There are occasional minor errors, such as 'The given process diagram gives you the information' (a bit informal) and 'the making of the fabric includes' (slightly awkward phrasing). However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. Your control over punctuation and sentence construction is generally strong, and the majority of your sentences are error-free.
