IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The diagram illustrates the manufacturing process of fabric from bamboo.

Overall, the manufacturing process involves nine stages, beginning with the planting of bamboo trees and ending with the production of fabric. A complex step in the process is spinning the fabric to make yarn.

Initially, the process begins with the planting of bamboo plants, especially in spring. Next, in autumn season, harvesting is done manually. In the next stage, the harvested plants are cut into strips by a machine, after that the strips are crushed to make liquid pulp. After that, long fibres are separated from the liquid pulp by making the use of a filter.

In the subsequent stage, the separated fibres are softened by adding water and amine oxide. Next, these fibres are spined to form a yarn. Thereafter, weave the yarn to produce a fabric. In the final stage, the fabric is made into different kinds of cloths such as shirts and socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully identifies the main stages of the bamboo manufacturing process. You have provided a clear overview and followed the sequence logically. However, to reach a higher band, you should aim to make more explicit comparisons or highlight key features more effectively. For example, noting that the process is entirely mechanical until the chemical treatment stage would add depth. The summary is accurate, but it could be improved by grouping the stages more analytically rather than just listing them chronologically. Overall, you have addressed all parts of the task well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Initially', 'In the next stage', 'In the subsequent stage', and 'Thereafter' to guide the reader through the process. The paragraphing is appropriate, with each stage of the process clearly separated. The flow of information is smooth, and the progression from raw material to finished product is easy to follow. The use of referencing is generally clear, contributing to the overall coherence of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the process, using terms like 'harvesting', 'crushed', 'liquid pulp', and 'amine oxide' accurately. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'spined' instead of 'spun' and 'making the use of' which is slightly unnatural. While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise technical collocations or varied verbs would enhance the sophistication of your writing. The current range is sufficient for the task but lacks the flexibility required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While most sentences are clear, there are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'in autumn season' (should be 'in the autumn season') and 'weave the yarn' (should be 'the yarn is woven'). The use of passive voice is appropriate for a process description, though it is not used consistently throughout. Punctuation is generally correct, and errors do not impede communication. To improve, focus on ensuring consistent subject-verb agreement and refining the use of passive constructions.
