IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram depicts the linear process for manufacturing of fabric from bamboo, begins with planting bamboo and ends with outcome as a clothes.
Overall, diagram is divided into nine stages and each performs particular role such as planting bamboo initially, cutting and filtering at middle stages and weaving fabric at the end for making clothes.
At first step, the bamboo plants are planted in the spring season. By autumn, plants are ready for harvesting and this is second step of overall process. Thirdly, the harvested plants are further process for cut into strips with the help of cutter. Followingly, strips are been send for crush to male liquid pulp, also filter and separate long fibres from liquid at fourth and fifth stage respectively.
At sixth step, the separated fibres proceed for mixture of water and amine oxide to make fibres soft. Furthermore, it is spin to make yarn ball at seventh stage. At eight stage, the yarn is weave to make fabric. Lastly, the fabric is designed for clothes such as tshirts and shocks.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, from planting to the final product. The overview is clear, identifying the nine stages and the general nature of the process. However, the description is somewhat mechanical, listing steps sequentially rather than grouping them into logical phases (e.g., raw material preparation, chemical processing, and finishing). While the main features are reported, the response lacks a more analytical approach to the comparisons or the transformation of the material. The inclusion of 'tshirts and shocks' (likely meant to be socks) is a good detail, but the overall development is quite basic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized, moving step-by-step through the diagram. Paragraphing is used, though the second paragraph is quite long and could have been split to improve readability. Cohesive devices such as 'At first step', 'Thirdly', 'Followingly', and 'Furthermore' are used, but some are slightly unnatural or misused (e.g., 'Followingly' is not standard English). Referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences feels a bit repetitive due to the reliance on simple transition words at the start of each sentence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe the process clearly. There are some attempts at technical terms like 'amine oxide' and 'liquid pulp'. However, there are several word-choice errors and inaccuracies, such as 'male liquid pulp' (likely meant 'make'), 'strips are been send' (grammatical error affecting lexical clarity), and 'shocks' (likely meant 'socks'). These errors do not impede communication, but they demonstrate a limited range and some lack of precision in vocabulary usage.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Examples include 'manufacturing of fabric' (missing article), 'begins with planting' (missing subject), 'strips are been send' (incorrect passive voice construction), and 'it is spin' (should be 'spun'). While the meaning remains understandable, these errors are persistent and occur in almost every sentence. The student needs to focus on subject-verb agreement, verb forms, and the correct use of articles to improve accuracy.
