IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The structure of the diagram illustrates the process of making fabric from bamboo.
Firstly, the plant bamboo grew in spring then in autumn the process of harvesting is started by farmer. After harvesting the pieces of bamboo is cut into strips with a cutting machine.
The strips then crushed to make liquid pulp then the liquid pulp is filtered to separate long fibers from liquid. After this process water and amine oxide is added to soften fibers.
Then the fibers are spin to make yarn. After spinning it is weaved to make fabric and from fabric different stuff and clothes are manufactured.
The whole process is done to make fabric because fabric is the main source to make clothes like shirts, pants and socks etc. Fabric is essential in daily life to make other stuffs like bedsheets, curtains, backpacks etc. In winter wool and fleece is also made by fabric.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, from harvesting to the final product. However, the final paragraph is largely irrelevant to the task, as it discusses the general uses of fabric rather than describing the diagram provided. To improve, focus strictly on the information presented in the visual prompt. The overview is also missing; a successful response should include a summary sentence highlighting the key stages of the process. While the main steps are identified, the lack of an overview and the inclusion of extraneous information prevent a higher score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the sequence of events. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical, relying heavily on simple transitions like 'Firstly', 'Then', and 'After this process'. The logical flow is generally clear, but the final paragraph lacks a clear connection to the preceding description of the manufacturing process, making the transition to the conclusion feel disjointed. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that every sentence directly relates to the diagram would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe the process steps (e.g., 'harvesting', 'crushed', 'filtered', 'spun'). However, there is a lack of flexibility and precision. Some phrasing is repetitive, such as the repeated use of 'make' and 'fabric'. There are also minor errors in word choice, such as 'different stuff' and 'other stuffs', which are informal and imprecise. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more precise technical vocabulary related to manufacturing processes and avoid informal, vague nouns.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Subject-verb agreement is inconsistent, such as 'the pieces of bamboo is cut' (should be 'are cut') and 'the strips then crushed' (should be 'are then crushed'). There are also issues with article usage and pluralisation, such as 'the plant bamboo grew' and 'different stuff'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy of the writing. Focusing on basic sentence construction and verb forms would be beneficial.
