IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagram below illustrates different processes undergone while making bamboo fabric.

Overall, the process consist of nine different main stages, starting from planting the bamboo tree to ending with the finished by product of the bamboo fabric. The numerous raw materials involved undergoes several physical processes including cutting, crushing spinning and weaving till the main fabric is ascertained.

First, bamboo is planted, then harvested when grown. Once they are harvested when due for harvesting, they are been cut into strips before the strips are been crushed into smaller pieces by a machine so as to make liquid pulp out of it. After crushing the strips, they are now filtered to separate long fibres from liquid.

Following this, this fibres are been mixed with water and amine oxide to get the fibres soften. The fibres is then spin to make yarn. Finally this yarn is weaved resulting in the finished fabric product.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main stages of the bamboo fabric manufacturing process, from planting to the final product. You have successfully identified the key steps, such as harvesting, crushing, filtering, and weaving. However, the overview is slightly inaccurate, as the process described in the diagram does not strictly consist of 'nine' stages, and some descriptions are a bit vague. To reach a higher band, ensure that the overview highlights the most significant transformations, such as the chemical treatment phase, rather than just counting steps. The summary is generally clear, but it could benefit from more precise terminology regarding the chemical and physical changes depicted in the diagram.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. You use basic cohesive devices like 'First', 'Following this', and 'Finally' to guide the reader through the process. While the progression is logical, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'this fibres', where the determiner does not match the noun. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that pronouns and determiners consistently refer back to the correct nouns would enhance the flow and cohesion of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'harvested', 'crushed', 'filtered', and 'manufactured'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'finished by product' is redundant and slightly unnatural; 'finished product' would suffice. You also use 'ascertained' incorrectly in this context; 'produced' or 'obtained' would be more appropriate. To improve, focus on using more precise technical vocabulary related to industrial processes and ensure that your word choices are contextually accurate. Some spelling and grammatical errors in word forms, such as 'soften' instead of 'softened', also limit the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'process consist', 'raw materials... undergoes', 'this fibres is') and incorrect passive voice constructions (e.g., 'they are been cut', 'this fibres are been mixed'). These errors are persistent throughout the text. While the meaning remains clear, the high frequency of these basic grammatical mistakes prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on consistent subject-verb agreement and the correct formation of passive voice structures will significantly improve your accuracy.
