IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The diagram presents the manufacturing process involved in the production of various clothes from bamboo plants.
From the broader overview, it is clear that the process involves both natural and industrial stages. In contrast, it starts with bamboo plantation and ends with the wearable clothes. The process consists of several stages such as harvesting, cutting, crushing, filtering, softening, making yarn and weaving.
The process begins with the bamboo plantation, which usually occurs in spring. Once the bamboo becomes mature in autumn, it is harvested. These harvested plants are further cut down into fine strips. Additionally, these strips are crushed to make the liquid pulp. This liquid pulp undergoes a filtration process to separate the long fibers from the liquid.
Moreover, these long fibers are softened by adding water and amine oxide. After the softening, these fibers are spin to make yarn. Once the yarn is created, the weaving process is done to make fabric. By combining this fabric various types of wearable clothes are made, such as t-shirts, socks and so on.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully identifies the main stages of the bamboo manufacturing process. You have provided a clear overview and followed the sequence of events from harvesting to the production of wearable items. However, the task requires making comparisons where relevant. While you describe the steps, you miss opportunities to highlight the transformation from raw material to finished product or the chemical versus mechanical nature of the stages. The overview is slightly generic; mentioning the transition from natural raw material to industrial output would have been more precise. Overall, the response covers all parts of the task well, but could be improved by synthesizing the information rather than just listing the steps chronologically.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a logical progression of steps. You use cohesive devices such as 'Once', 'Additionally', 'Moreover', and 'After the softening' to guide the reader through the process. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the initial stages from the later industrial phases. The flow is generally smooth, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To reach a higher band, ensure that the relationship between sentences is more varied and that the progression of ideas feels more natural rather than just a sequence of 'first, then, next' markers.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using process-specific terms like 'harvested', 'crushed', 'liquid pulp', 'filtration', and 'amine oxide'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'these fibers are spin', which should be 'spun'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication or 'less common' lexical items that would elevate the score to an 8.0. The word choice is generally accurate and appropriate for a technical description, but expanding your range of verbs and descriptive adjectives would improve the precision of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You show good control over passive voice, which is essential for process descriptions (e.g., 'is harvested', 'are crushed', 'are made'). However, there are a few grammatical slips, such as 'these fibers are spin' (should be 'spun') and 'By combining this fabric various types of wearable clothes are made' (which is slightly awkward; 'By processing this fabric, various types of clothes are produced' would be better). Despite these occasional errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the punctuation is generally correct throughout the text.
