IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The figure shows the complete process of manufacturing bamboo fabric from plantation, harvest to final product. There are a total of 8 steps for the production of bamboo fabric.
Starting from the plantation of bamboo, they are grown in the spring season and then harvested in the autumn season. It is a traditional hand-cutting process for harvesting bamboo. After all the bamboo is harvested, they are moved forward into the cutting process, where they cut down the leaves and get cut down into strips. Moreover, these strips are used for separating the pulp from the fibres, and the liquid is extracted. As a result, these fibres are then softened using amine oxide and water for making the fabric comfortable for wearing. Further, this softened fabric is spun to make yarn, and it is then woven for making fabric of choice, such as T-shirts and socks, as the final product.
In conclusion, this process includes a complete step-by-step process of planting bamboo to weaving fabric and getting a final product for wearing clothes in day-to-day life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have successfully identified the main stages of the bamboo fabric manufacturing process. You provided a clear overview and followed the sequence logically from plantation to the final product. However, to reach a higher band, you should aim to highlight the key features more analytically. For instance, you could have grouped the chemical and mechanical stages more distinctly or noted the transition from raw material to intermediate product (pulp/fibre) more precisely. While you covered the steps, the response lacks a clear 'summary' of the most significant stages, instead acting more like a step-by-step description. Including a more analytical overview would improve the score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized, moving chronologically through the process. You used some cohesive devices such as 'Starting from', 'After', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. However, the paragraphing is slightly unbalanced; the second paragraph is quite long and could have been split to better separate the initial harvesting stages from the chemical processing and final manufacturing stages. Additionally, some transitions feel a bit mechanical. Improving the variety of linking phrases and ensuring a more balanced paragraph structure would enhance the flow and coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the process, using terms like 'plantation', 'harvested', 'extracted', and 'spun'. However, there is some repetition of basic verbs like 'cut' and 'making'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise technical vocabulary related to industrial processes, such as 'processed', 'converted', 'transformed', or 'synthesized'. While your word choice is generally accurate and does not impede communication, it lacks the sophistication and flexibility required for a higher band. Focusing on collocations and more varied synonyms for common verbs will help elevate your lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'they are grown in the spring season and then harvested in the autumn season' (referring to 'bamboo' as 'they' is slightly awkward as it is an uncountable noun). Another example is 'for making the fabric comfortable for wearing', which could be phrased more naturally. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more consistent control over complex structures. Increasing the variety of sentence types and refining subject-verb agreement will improve your accuracy.
