IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The image illustrates the overall procedure for manufacturing fabric from bamboo in several steps including cutting, crushing, spinning, and weaving.

The process started from planting bamboo plants in the spring season, whereas harvested in the autumn season. After harvesting, the bamboo plants cut into strips by the machines. Moreover, its strips were crushed to make liquid pulp. In contrast, the next step was filtration, for separating long fibres from the liquid with the help of huge strainer. Furthermore, water and amine oxide were added in the mixture for fibre softening.

The next step was spinning to make yam in bundles. However, its last step was weaving to make fabric. As a result, synthetic fabric was ready to make several types of products such as socks, t-shirts, gloves, and many more.

The image shows the overall process of making fabric from bamboo plants in various steps such as cutting, spinning, and weaving, to make different products.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, from harvesting to the final product. However, the overview is somewhat repetitive, as the final paragraph essentially restates the introduction. While the key features are identified, the description lacks a clear, logical flow between the chemical processing stages (e.g., the addition of water and amine oxide) and the mechanical stages. To reach a higher band, ensure that the overview synthesizes the process more effectively rather than just listing steps, and avoid redundant concluding sentences that do not add new information or summary value.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organized into paragraphs, which helps readability. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as the use of 'In contrast' to introduce a step in a linear process where no contrast exists. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'its strips' and 'its last step', which makes the progression feel slightly disjointed. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer back to the intended nouns would enhance the flow of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with terms like 'manufacturing', 'filtration', and 'synthetic' used correctly. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'yam' instead of 'yarn' and 'huge strainer' which is a bit informal for a technical description. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on basic verbs like 'make' and 'cut'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise technical terminology related to industrial processes and ensure accurate spelling of key terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and passive voice construction, such as 'the bamboo plants cut into strips' (should be 'are cut') and 'whereas harvested in the autumn' (which is a fragment). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the process, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy. Focusing on consistent use of the passive voice for process descriptions will significantly improve the quality of your writing.
