IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram illustrates fabric manufacturing from natural sources called bamboo.
Overall, This is nine stapes process. Which starts from planting of bamboo plants in agriculture land and ends with the weave and making clothes. It is complicated process.
The process began with planting small bamboo plants into farming space in Spring. all the bamboo plant grow in land till Autumn and after whole growth farmers harvest all the trees than sends all the harvest to factory. Next stage is to cut all the trees into strips with the rotary blades. forth stage starts with crush strips and make pulp, continues with filtering liquid pulp in filter, During this process all the long fibers were separated from liquids.
subsequently, Water and Amine oxide added into fibers which make fibers more softer. Than this fibers underwent for spinning process to produce yarn. fabric were made from yarn as it is manufactured with the process of weaving. After weaving process gray fabric were manufactured and from this fabric wearable clothes were made this is the last step of this process.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers all stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, from planting to the final product. The overview identifies the process as having nine stages and being complex, which provides a clear summary. However, the description of the stages is somewhat repetitive and lacks a more sophisticated synthesis of the information. While the main features are reported, the connection between the chemical treatment and the physical transformation could be more clearly articulated to demonstrate a higher level of analytical skill. Overall, the response fulfills the requirements of the task by accurately describing the sequence of events shown in the diagram.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing the process. Cohesive devices such as 'Next stage', 'subsequently', and 'After' are used to guide the reader through the steps. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing and punctuation errors, such as the sentence fragment 'Which starts from planting...' and the inconsistent capitalization of 'This' in the second paragraph. The use of referencing is sometimes mechanical, and the transition between the harvesting and the factory processing could be smoother to improve the overall progression of ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with terms like 'manufacturing', 'harvest', 'rotary blades', and 'spinning process' used correctly. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'agriculture land' instead of 'agricultural land', 'make fibers more softer' (a double comparative), and 'gray fabric'. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on basic descriptors. To reach a higher band, the student should aim for more precise terminology and avoid repetitive phrasing, such as using 'process' multiple times in close proximity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('all the bamboo plant grow'), incorrect article usage ('into farming space'), and tense inconsistencies. The use of punctuation is also problematic, particularly with sentence fragments and comma splices. While the meaning is generally clear, the high frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for subject-verb agreement would significantly improve the accuracy.
