IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagram provided illustrates the manufacturing of fabric from bamboo. Overall, this process consists of nine steps: starting from the planting of bamboo all the way till the final product is obtained. Bamboo is harvested in autumn after which it undergoes a series of steps including cutting, filtering, crushing, and weaving.

First, the bamboo is planted and when its is full grown it is then harvested. Next, this harvested bamboo is converted into strips via cutting process. In the third step, these strips are crushed to convert them into a liquid pulp. Later, this pulp goes through the filtration process, where the long bamboo fibres are separated from this liquid. In stage six, these residual fibres are softened by the addition of water and amine oxide. After this, these softened fibres go through spinning to produce yarn. Then comes the second last stage in which the yarn obtained from the previous stage is weaved to fabric, which is finally used to produce cloths such as socks and shirts.
