IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram illustrates the manufacturing process of fabric from bamboo plant.
Overall, the manufacturing of fabric involves several stages. Starting from the cultivation of bamboo plants then harvesting. After that it undergoes cutting, crushing, spinning and weaving steps to make fabric.
First, the bamboo plant is cultivated in the spring season and then harvested in autumn. After that, the bamboo plant will undergo a cutting process in which the plant cut into strips. Next, there is a need to crush these strips to make liquid pulp. Right after the crushing process, the filtration process takes place which involve the separation of long fibres from liquid pulp. Then addition of water and amine oxide to soften the fibres. After this step spinning process happens to make yam. Then yam leads to weaving stage which is the final step of making fabric. This fabric is used in different clothing types such as shirt and socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers all stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, from cultivation to the final product. The overview is present but could be more effectively integrated; currently, it is a bit list-like. While the main features are identified, the response lacks a clear comparative element. For instance, it describes the steps sequentially but misses opportunities to group stages or highlight the transformation from raw material to finished product more analytically. The inclusion of specific details like 'amine oxide' and 'filtration' shows a good grasp of the provided information, but the overall development remains somewhat descriptive rather than analytical.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is logically organized, following the chronological order of the diagram. Paragraphing is used, though the body paragraph is quite dense. Cohesive devices such as 'First', 'After that', 'Next', and 'Then' are used to guide the reader, but they are somewhat repetitive and mechanical. The flow between sentences is generally clear, but the lack of more sophisticated linking phrases makes the progression feel slightly simplistic. Referencing is generally clear, though the transition between the cultivation phase and the industrial processing phase could be smoother to improve the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, with accurate use of technical terms like 'cultivation', 'harvested', 'filtration', and 'amine oxide'. However, the range is limited, and there are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'yam' instead of 'yarn'. The repetition of basic verbs like 'make' and 'process' limits the sophistication of the writing. To reach a higher band, the student should aim to incorporate a wider variety of precise verbs and nouns related to industrial manufacturing processes to demonstrate more flexibility.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'the plant cut into strips' (missing auxiliary verb 'is') and 'which involve the separation' (subject-verb agreement error). Additionally, some sentences are fragmented or lack proper articles, such as 'addition of water' (should be 'the addition'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring consistent subject-verb agreement would significantly improve the grammatical quality.
