IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The diagram illustrates the process of manufacturing fabric from bamboo.

Overall, the production process consists of several stages, beginning with the cultivation and harvesting of bamboo and ending with the production of finished fabric. The process involves both mechanical and chemical treatments to convert the raw bamboo into usable fibres.

First, bamboo plants are grown and harvested when they reach a suitable size. The harvested bamboo is then cut into smaller pieces and crushed mechanically. After this, the crushed material is soaked in a chemical solution, which helps to break down the bamboo and separate the cellulose from other materials.

Next, the cellulose is processed to produce a thick solution. This solution is then passed through a machine with very small holes, forming long, thin fibres. These fibres are subsequently treated and cleaned before being spun together to create bamboo yarn.

Finally, the yarn is woven or knitted to produce bamboo fabric. The finished material can then be used to manufacture a variety of textile products. Overall, bamboo is transformed from a natural plant into fabric through a combination of mechanical processing, chemical treatment, fibre production and weaving.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively covers all stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, from cultivation to the final textile product. You have successfully identified and reported the main features, such as the transition from mechanical crushing to chemical treatment and the final weaving stage. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the entire process. To reach a higher band, ensure that you explicitly highlight the most significant comparisons or contrasts, such as the shift from physical processing to chemical transformation, which you have done well. The information is accurate and well-developed throughout the response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear progression from the initial stages to the final product. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the introduction, the mechanical/chemical stages, and the final production steps. Cohesive devices such as 'First', 'After this', 'Next', and 'Finally' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the process. The flow of ideas is smooth, and each sentence contributes to the overall clarity of the description. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of cohesive devices, making the text easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You have used a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a process description, such as 'cultivation', 'cellulose', 'mechanically', and 'textile products'. The terminology is precise and fits the context of the diagram well. There are no spelling errors, and the word choices are natural and accurate. To achieve a higher band, you could incorporate slightly more sophisticated or academic collocations to describe the transformation process, but the current range is sufficient and demonstrates a strong command of the topic-specific vocabulary required for this task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The response demonstrates a high level of grammatical control. You have used a variety of complex structures, such as passive voice constructions ('bamboo plants are grown and harvested', 'is then passed through a machine'), which are essential for describing processes. The sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is used correctly throughout. The mix of simple and complex sentences is well-balanced, ensuring that the text remains readable and professional. There are no noticeable grammatical slips, reflecting a high degree of accuracy and flexibility in your writing.
