Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the score. Furthermore, the content is incomplete; the student explicitly states that the remaining steps will be discussed in an 'upcoming paragraph,' which is never provided. The summary of the process is fragmented and misses several stages shown in the diagram, such as the processing of the bamboo into pulp and the chemical treatment stages. Because the response is under-length and fails to provide a complete overview of the process, it does not adequately address the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The organization of the response is poor. The use of a meta-commentary sentence ('the rest of 3 steps we will discuss in upcoming paragraph') is inappropriate for an IELTS Academic Task 1 report. The paragraphing is illogical, as the text is split into two very short, disjointed sections. Cohesive devices are repetitive, with almost every sentence beginning with 'then' or 'in the... step', which creates a mechanical and monotonous flow. There is no clear progression of ideas, and the overall structure is fragmented.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.5
The vocabulary is very basic and repetitive. The student relies heavily on simple, functional words like 'step', 'bamboo', and 'fabric'. There is a lack of technical terminology appropriate for describing a manufacturing process (e.g., 'pulping', 'extrusion', 'viscose'). Additionally, there are errors in word formation, such as 'cutted' (incorrect past participle of 'cut') and 'spinned' (incorrect past participle of 'spin'). The range of vocabulary is insufficient to convey the information with any degree of precision or sophistication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The grammatical range is extremely limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences. There is a consistent lack of punctuation, particularly at the end of sentences, and the use of capitalization is erratic. Errors are frequent and systematic, such as the misuse of verb forms ('cutted', 'spinned') and the omission of articles (e.g., 'bamboo plant is planted'). The sentence structure is simplistic and lacks the complexity required to describe a process effectively. These errors, combined with the lack of punctuation, make the text difficult to follow.
