IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram illustrates the several stages involved in the manufacturing of fabric from bamboo.
Over all, the production of fabric consist of 8 stages. It starts with the plantation of bamboo in spring, and end with the finshed clothing products.
Firstly, the bamboo plants are grown in spring season and after a whole year of growth they are finally harvested in the autumn season. After this the harvested plants are passed through a machine that cut it into strips. These strips are then crushed to make a liquid pulp. The next step is the filtering stage where the liquid pulp is filtered to extract long fibers from it. Then comes the processing stage where water and amine oxide is added to soften the fibers.
In the last two stages, the soften fibers are being spun to make yarn which is then woven to make fabric and finished clothing products like shirts and socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers all stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, from plantation to the final product. You have successfully identified the main features and provided a clear overview. However, the report lacks a comparative element. For instance, you could have noted the duration of the growth phase (one year) compared to the subsequent mechanical and chemical processing stages. While the key information is present, the analysis is somewhat descriptive rather than analytical. To reach a higher band, ensure you highlight the relationship between the stages more explicitly rather than simply listing them in chronological order.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized, following the chronological order of the process. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the introduction and overview from the detailed body stages. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'After this', and 'In the last two stages' to guide the reader. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the transition between the crushing, filtering, and processing stages feels more integrated rather than a list of sequential steps.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the process, such as 'plantation', 'harvested', 'liquid pulp', and 'amine oxide'. There are some minor errors in word form, such as 'finshed' (finished) and 'soften fibers' (softened fibers). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Incorporating more precise technical collocations related to industrial manufacturing would enhance the quality of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that, while not impeding communication, are noticeable. For example, 'production of fabric consist' should be 'consists', and 'machine that cut it' should be 'machine that cuts it'. Additionally, 'the soften fibers are being spun' is slightly awkward; 'the softened fibers are spun' would be more accurate. You have a reasonable grasp of grammar, but more attention to subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage is needed to reach a higher band.
