IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The below picture illustrates the process of fabric from beginning to completion phase.
Overall, its a huge and time taking process from the plantation of bamboo to the making of the fabric. It includes planting, harvesting, cutting, filtering, making liquid pulps, spinning, weaving and making fabric at the end.
The process starts from harvesting the bamboo in spring, then wait for whole season to pass and cut when Autumn comes. After, harvesting, the cutting phase starts from which liquid pulp will make, then separate long fibers from that liquid. In addition, soften fiber will extract by adding water and chemical, further spin them to make yarn and weave them hard to make the fabric. Afterall these steps, fabric came in shape which will use to make various items, such as shirt, pent, socks. This is very difficult and hectic process and needs dedication and huge time for better quality of fabric.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, from harvesting to the final product. However, the description is somewhat superficial. For example, the explanation of the chemical process is vague ('adding water and chemical'), and the transition between stages lacks technical precision. The summary of the process is accurate, but it misses the opportunity to highlight the specific transformation stages (e.g., the conversion of bamboo into bamboo chips and then into pulp). To improve, ensure that all key features of the diagram are described with more detail and technical accuracy rather than just listing the steps.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into three paragraphs, which is appropriate for a report. There is a clear attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'The process starts from', and 'In addition'. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and some transitions are awkward, such as 'Afterall these steps, fabric came in shape'. The referencing is occasionally unclear, and the logical progression could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence logically follows the previous one will help achieve a higher band score.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it is somewhat limited and repetitive. Phrases like 'huge and time taking process' and 'very difficult and hectic process' are informal and not ideal for an academic report. There are also some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'pent' (likely meant 'pants') and 'soften fiber' (should be 'softened fibers'). To improve, focus on using more precise, academic terminology related to manufacturing processes, such as 'raw material', 'chemical treatment', 'spinning', and 'weaving'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity, such as 'its a huge' (it's), 'liquid pulp will make' (passive voice needed: 'will be made'), and 'fabric came in shape' (should be 'takes shape'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. To improve, focus on mastering the passive voice, which is essential for describing processes, and ensure subject-verb agreement and correct article usage.
