IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The accompanying picture illustrates the process of fabric production from beginning to completion phase.
Overall, it's a complex and time-consuming process from the plantation of bamboo to the making of the fabric. It includes planting, harvesting, cutting, filtering, making liquid pulps, spinning, weaving and making fabric at the end.
The process starts from harvesting the bamboo in spring, then waiting for a whole season to pass and cutting when Autumn comes. After harvesting, the cutting phase starts from which liquid pulp will be made, then separating long fibers from that liquid. In addition, softened fibers will be extracted by adding water and chemicals, further spinning them to make yarn and weave them tightly to make the fabric. After all these steps, fabric takes in shape which will be used to make various items, such as shirts, pants, socks. This is a very difficult and hectic process and needs dedication and significant time for better quality of fabric.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
You have successfully identified the main stages of the bamboo fabric manufacturing process. You provided a clear overview and followed the sequence of steps from plantation to the final product. However, the response lacks a clear comparison of the stages or a more detailed breakdown of the chemical/mechanical processes shown in the diagram. To improve, ensure you describe the specific transitions, such as the transformation from bamboo to liquid pulp and then to yarn, with more precision. The inclusion of personal opinions like 'difficult and hectic' is inappropriate for an Academic Task 1 report, which requires an objective, neutral tone. Focus strictly on reporting the data presented in the visual.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraph. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Overall,' 'The process starts,' and 'After all these steps' to guide the reader through the stages. However, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider range of linking words to show relationships between the steps. For example, the transition between the harvesting phase and the chemical processing phase is a bit abrupt. Paragraphing is used, but the body section could be split into two paragraphs—one for the raw material preparation and one for the industrial processing—to enhance the logical progression of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the process, using terms like 'plantation,' 'harvesting,' 'fibers,' and 'spinning.' However, some word choices are slightly informal or imprecise for an academic report, such as 'takes in shape' and 'hectic.' Additionally, the phrase 'making liquid pulps' could be more accurately described as 'creating a pulp solution.' To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise technical collocations related to manufacturing processes and avoid subjective adjectives that do not describe the visual information provided.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies. For instance, 'the cutting phase starts from which liquid pulp will be made' is awkward; a better construction would be 'the cutting phase, from which liquid pulp is produced.' There are also minor errors in article usage and verb tense consistency, such as 'fabric takes in shape.' To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the use of passive voice, which is essential for describing industrial processes objectively. Despite these errors, they do not significantly impede communication.
